"I bought the big deal from InvoGreen - and they were out and had the mulch down with 2 days!  I had only given written instructions - they were a bit unusual, but the work was done exactly as I had hoped.  The area was clean and neat - and everything was done just ahead of the week of rain that was planned.

"Tim did a great job.  I received 3 bids, Penniston was well under the high bid and a little over the low bid.  I chose Penniston because I felt comfortable with Tim when I met him.  He showed up for our initial appointment on time, walked the property with me, made some suggestions, emailed me a proposal the next morning.  When I contacted him to do the install he gave me a date to start the job.  He showed up on that day, removed the old fence, drilled the post holes and contacted the Creve Coeur inspector. The following day after the inspection he installed the entire fence.  We ordered a arched gate that he told us would take about 3 weeks to get from his supplier.  When the gate came in(within 3 weeks) he contacted me and came out on Saturday and installed the gate.  We re just waiting for the final approval from the Creve Coeur inspector. The fence looks great and Tim has been a pleasure to work with.  I would highly recommend Tim  Penniston.

"With a slight delay due to COVID, the work was very well done. Plaster repairs were completed, all furniture was moved away from the walls, the floors were covered. The colors were exactly as I requested, including the crown molding. The work was completed in the time quoted and for the estimated cost."

"Excellent attitude and quality of service.  I purchased this Big Deal to try out a home improvement company that I could use for larger jobs in the future.  I was not disappointed.  Josh and his associate were VERY professional and friendly even though my job consisted of a bunch of little pieces to be done.  When they said no job was too small or too big, they really meant it.  I liked them so much I've already hired them again to do handyman repairs throughout the home and I will keep them in mind for bigger home improvement projects in the future.  For me, having pleasant, professional people help me keep my 85-year old Webster Groves home maintained is very important.  I like to feel I have a team supporting me in my ongoing efforts to improve and maintain the appearance and workings of my house.  I count Josh and his associates as members of my team now!

"

I contacted HMR and asked that they provide me with an estimate to remove my existing chain-link fence and install a six foot vinyl privacy fence.  They showed up the same day and gave me, what I considered to be, a very reasonable price to perform the work and provide all the materials. (Much lower than the others)  So I chose HMR.

They scheduled me for the following Saturday.  They arrived at 7 a.m. as scheduled and were finished that afternoon.  I was very impressed with their knowledge and willingness to clean everything up afterwards.  If you're considering a new fence, I would definitely recommend these guys!

Gate Repair questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to install a manual gate yourself, it is generally not recommended. Professional installation is strongly advised, especially for automated or large driveway gates. Gates can be extremely heavy, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, which makes them bulky and dangerous to maneuver into place. Proper installation requires perfect positioning and balancing to ensure the gate swings smoothly and functions as intended. For automated gates, the wiring is also hazardous and typically requires a licensed electrician. Mistakes during a DIY installation can be costly, as materials alone can average around $1,000. Given the safety risks and the difficulty of achieving a proper setup, it is best to hire a professional gate installer.

Yes, professionals can install gates with locking mechanisms and access control systems for added security.

While entryways are seldom added to a house to increase the sale price, they are commonly constructed to increase the livability and enjoyment of a home. So, while they aren’t necessary, they do make for a more comfortable and luxurious-feeling home. Entryways are most valuable in areas of extreme heat, cold, or rain, as the space between the living area and the outdoors helps keep the outdoors outside. Plus, snow, wet boots, and mud are all corralled into one space that’s easy to clean.

The cost to install a gate varies widely, with a typical range between $1,500 and $7,000. The average cost is around $3,500. However, the final price can be as low as $200 for a simple gate or as high as $12,000 for a large, automated security gate.

Key factors that determine the installation cost include:

  • Gate Material: This is a primary cost factor. Chain-link and vinyl are the most affordable, while wood and PVC are mid-range options. Wrought iron, aluminum, and other metals are the most expensive materials.

  • Automation: Automated gates are significantly more expensive than manual ones because they require motors, sensors, controls, and electrical installation.

  • Size and Type: The dimensions and style of the gate (e.g., swinging vs. sliding) will impact the price.

  • Security Level: Gates with advanced security features will increase the overall cost.

Automatic gates don’t use too much electricity, and you should see a minimal effect on your utility bill. In fact, certain gate systems are entirely self-sufficient and rely on solar panels attached to or near the gate to power the motor. While a gate is large and there is a powerful motor moving it, it’s not something that sees constant use throughout the day. For most automatic gates, expect to see a utility bill increase of only around $10 per month.
