A dryer vent inspection is simply the process of checking the vent for the possibility of damage or clogs. You can do it yourself or hire a pro. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the portion of the vent that’s behind the appliance for lint buildup or kinks. Check the connection of the vent to the wall for loose parts or lint that’s escaping the vent. Check the exterior exhaust vent for signs of damage or lint blockage. In a ventless dryer, lint it collected in a lint filter found inside the door or dryer drum. Vented dryers have this same lint filter, but in a ventless dryer you’ll need to stay on top of cleaning the lint filter after every wash. This is a common best practice, regardless of your dryer vent type.

A burnt rubber smell coming from your clothes after they’ve been in the dryer can be the result of too much lint in the lint trap. This prevents air from circulating properly, and the lint may even come into contact with the heating element. It could also be the result of bigger issues like a faulty thermostat or worn-out dryer belt. A burnt rubber smell can even come from elastic waistbands or rubber decals in your clothes. To remedy this, dry clothes on a lower heat setting or allow them to air dry instead.

Your dryer vent hose should be as straight as you can possibly get it. A straight vent means less lint buildup in the hose. If the hose has a lot of bends and turns, it’s much easier and much more likely for lint to get stuck along the line, meaning you’ll have to clean it out a lot more often to decrease the risk of a total blockage or a fire.

The length of an allowable dryer vent varies based on the local building codes and regulations. Typically, the maximum range is 25 to 35 feet. However, if the vent must have any 90-degree turns, you may see a reduction of five feet from the maximum. Some municipalities may have no specific maximum allowable length as part of the code. Typically, installers will run the vent over the shortest possible distance for safety. The dryer vent cleaning cost is less with a shorter vent length as well.
