Start by disassembling the panel and carefully checking the fuse filament or ceramic components. If your microwave uses a glass fuse, you’ll likely see discoloration and a melted filament. If your microwave contains a ceramic fuse, you’ll need to use a multimeter continuity tester to check if there’s continuity.

A convection microwave has two different modes that enable it to operate as a microwave or a convection oven. Inverter microwaves specifically use inverter technology that makes them more effective and able to evenly heat food at a rapid pace. Some convection microwaves use inverter technology, too—the two don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

The magnetron, which is the component that generates the microwave energy used to heat your food, is the most likely piece to cause your appliance to fail. Unfortunately, your microwave won’t serve any purpose without a functioning magnetron, so not only is this the most common repair, but it’s also the most important. 

Repairing a broken magnetron usually costs between $100 and $200 or $175 on average. About half of that cost goes toward labor, and the other half is for a new magnetron. Higher-end microwaves may demand larger or more complex components, which could increase your repair cost.

Most local governments classify microwaves as hazardous household electronic waste items that are bad for the environment. This is why you could receive a fine for improperly disposing of a microwave in your normal curbside garbage collection or a landfill. Often, state law requires the hazardous components to be removed and safely disposed of before the item is recycled as scrap metal.
