"I had the best experience working with Stephanie and her husband Chris. Stephanie runs the customer service and design side of the business, and Chris and his employee, Simon, did the actual wallpaper install. I only needed wallpaper installed on one wall, but I had a terrible time finding a contractor to complete the work. From the moment I contacted Stephanie, she was helpful, friendly, and respectful. Chris and Simon were always on time and were polite and friendly as well. We had a couple hiccups as my wall was textured and the wallpaper I ordered was peel and stick and wouldnâ t adhere to the texture. However, Stephanie got back with me with a couple solutions to move forward - I opted to go with a liner and Chris and Simon came back the next week to install the liner and the week after to finish installing the paper. The install was more expensive than I anticipated, but I would rather pay more money to get a quality job. Chris mentioned that he would apply the wallpaper as an artist and as carefully as if he was installing it in his own home. He did!! I love the way the wallpaper turned out!!! So grateful I found Stephanie and her husband. I give them my highest recommendation."

Wallpapering questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can apply peel-and-stick wallpaper over wood paneling, but it requires significant preparation for a good result. Peel-and-stick wallpaper has a weaker adhesive than traditional wallpaper and works best on smooth, non-textured surfaces like painted or primed drywall. Because wood paneling is often textured with grooves, any flaws in the underlying surface will likely be visible after application. To prepare the paneling, you must ensure the surface is free of cracks, holes, and protrusions by filling any indentations and sanding rough spots to create a smooth surface. An alternative is to remove the paneling and apply the wallpaper directly to the underlying drywall or plaster, provided it is in good condition.

The color of the paint, its opacity, and the depth of the texture on the paper all affect how many coats of paint you need to apply to paintable wallpaper. You'll need at least two coats of paint to ensure even coverage. Don’t be surprised if you need to apply three coats if the embossing is very deep or if you use a dark color.

One of the biggest downsides to peel-and-stick wallpaper is that it doesn't last as long as traditional wallpaper. Its lifespan depends on several factors, including the quality of the paper, proper wall preparation and application, and the room's conditions. As a general rule, peel-and-stick wallpaper can last for at least five years, but this can vary significantly. Budget products may only last about 3 years, while higher-quality products can stay up for 7 years or more in ideal conditions. Factors that can shorten its lifespan include high humidity (such as in a bathroom), dirty walls, and low-quality paper. If used on flooring, expect it to last only 1 to 3 years unless sealed. However, the shorter lifespan can be seen as a positive, making it a great choice for people who enjoy switching up their interiors more frequently.

While peel-and-stick wallpapers require no time to cure, the adhesives for other types of papers will take a day or two to dry and up to three weeks to fully cure. The differences are the type of paper, the type of adhesive, and the humidity and temperature in the space.

Painting over wallpaper is an efficient way to cover it if it’s in decent shape. Before painting over wallpaper, make sure the surface is clean and smooth. You may have to remove minor problem areas, such as lifted seams or small peels, with a sheetrock knife or putty knife. Add a latex- or oil-based primer to keep moisture at bay before painting. You’ll likely need two coats of paint to cover the area.
