"My inspector Ian was an extremely polite young man. He was very thorough investigating my foundation and type of basement and working with me. He was able to show me and describe the process used by the company to drain tile my basement. He also gave me options provided by their business and other alternatives. He used visuals and showed me what I need to do to prep for the job. I feel it was a very comprehensive experience and had no questions by time it was done."

Small jobs welcome

"My basement had been damp for years, gradually became wetter and flooded this spring. Approve installed a sump pump which immediately flushed water when plugged in. They removed outside foundation plantings, an old tilted sidewalk all of which directed water into basement. They backfilled with sand and black dirt and topped with great sod. Very good crew,. Very pleased. They also did my steam conversion in 2020 and have installed new toilets and sink faucets. Could not be happier."

"Marshall Handyman Services performed all of this work, and everything was very easy for us. Each time we called, Dave Marshall came out promptly to look over what was needed. Within a few days he gave us a complete estimate of the work to be done and the charge. I thought his prices were appropriate; generally no more or no less than I might expect. He also let us know the time frame in which we could expect the work to be completed. He was flexible and responsive to our requests. He did what we asked when it made sense, but also let us know when he thought there was a better approach.
Marshall completed the work and in all cases were were happy with the quality and appearance. Also, in the case of these three visits, the amount billed was never more than the estimate, and a couple of times somewhat less.
The $100 price cited was for the chimney cap and included the cap and installation.

"Ross was very up-front with the estimate and called back while we were getting other estimates.  Once we gave the go-ahead, he quickly worked us in for the one day job.  The finish was done very well and they managed to avoid damaging recently placed landscaping and plantings.  I am quite satisfied with the results and will use them again for concrete work."

Foundation Drain Installation FAQs, answered by experts

Ideally, your sump pump discharge should run down a natural downhill slope 10 to 20 feet away from your home’s foundation. However, if your property is naturally flat, that might not be an option. Instead, you may be able to discharge it into a neighborhood storm drain or a nearby creek or pond. If that’s not possible, consider burying it underground.

A range of certified professionals can install French drains, from foundation specialists to plumbers. However, you’ll want to make sure that the professional has a breadth of experience installing the specific type of drain you need in or outside your home. Your contractor should also have experience with sump pumps, waterproofing, and flood-proof landscaping.

The cost of basement waterproofing is $4,950 for the average homeowner. However, you could end up paying between $600 and $14,000, depending on factors like basement size, waterproofing method, and the region you live in.

If you live in an area with heavy rainfall, you might be paying more for waterproofing than if you lived somewhere drier since waterproofing contractors would be in high demand. Likewise, a 500-foot basement costs between $2,500 and $5,000 to waterproof, but that price rises significantly for a larger basement.

Walkout basements cost more than other kinds of basements, and can also increase your risk of leaks as well as a loss of insulation, leading to higher heating and cooling costs. Improperly installed walkout basements may lead to structural issues with your foundation, so ensure you’re working with a contractor who has extensive experience with this kind of basement.

Due to the nature of basements, some level of waterproofing is necessary to prevent water from seeping in and causing damage. Some definitive signs that your basement needs waterproofing measures or needs existing waterproofing measures need to be updated include:

  • Water in your basement, including damp walls or puddles on the floor

  • Mold spots in your basement

  • Musty smells or odors

  • Warped doors or walls

  • Cracks in walls

  • Insect issues, such as cockroaches and termites
