"They were amazing. Their quote was by far the lowest even though the specifications for gravel and asphalt were the same as the more expensive companies. They arrived exactly on time with a large crew, big trucks and machinery and the prepwork was done very quickly and professionally. This happened again on the asphalt installation day. Lots of trucks, an asphalt laying machine just like the ones the highway department uses, only smaller, and a steam roller. Again, very professional; everyone knew their job and they worked well as a team. They also went out of their way to do things just the way we asked. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again and the driveway looks perfect."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

In Virginia, MN, asphalt paving projects are complicated by the aggressive freeze-thaw cycle, which requires a thicker asphalt layer and enhanced drainage. The area's mining history can mean clay-heavy soils needing special base preparation. Steep driveways, mature tree roots, and the potential for underground utilities in older neighborhoods also add significant complexity for contractors, requiring careful planning and specialized techniques.

Helpful?

In Minnesota, common habits can damage your asphalt paving. Using metal snow shovels or sharp ice scrapers can gouge the surface, while excessive rock salt deteriorates the material. Ignoring small cracks allows water to infiltrate and cause freeze damage. Consistently parking a heavy RV in the same spot can create depressions, and allowing sprinklers to spray the pavement will also shorten its lifespan.

Helpful?

In Virginia, MN, asphalt paving must prioritize function over form due to harsh winters. Durability for heavy snow loads and proper slope for drainage are critical to prevent ice dams. Aesthetics are integrated through curved driveways that suit the topography or decorative borders. Layouts often include wider turnarounds for snowplow access and dedicated space for RVs, reflecting local recreational culture.

Helpful?

To make asphalt paving safer in Virginia, MN, consider installing a heated driveway system to prevent hazardous ice buildup. Opt for textured surfaces to improve traction and rounded corners to prevent injuries during play. When sealcoating, choose low-toxicity products to protect pets and ensure the surface has cured completely before allowing children or animals on it. Proper grading also eliminates standing water that could freeze.

Helpful?

In Virginia, MN, it's time for an asphalt paving project if you see cracks wider than a quarter-inch, multiple potholes, or "alligator" cracking patterns. Other warning signs include soft spots that give underfoot, crumbling edges, or water pooling for over 24 hours. Since asphalt needs major attention every 15–20 years in this climate, age alone is a key indicator.
