Hi there my name is Michael. I’ve always enjoyed painting and strive to do the best job possible. I put a lot of pride in my work and always keep an open mind to new ideas on how to do things. All work that I do for others I do to the standard of how I would do it in my house. I’m currently in the handicap remodeling industry where I do everything including a lot of painting.

We hold on to one very important word here at Schleifer’s WoodWorks LLC… Integrity. This company is built on it. When we started out on the idea of building “another construction company” we knew we had to be different. Together, Corey and his team have 30+ years in construction and a wealth of knowledge in over 20 trades and specialties. With all of our history living, working, and loving these Twin Cities, we needed to bring out the best in our fields. One of the biggest problems in construction today is the lack of attention to the customer… YOU! We take jobs one by one to ensure we get it done right, the first time. We pride ourselves on our experience and aim to bring “the craft” back to craftsmanship. Let’s get connected.

"The only thing I was dissappointed in was that the deck has a rough finish, but I suspect that was due to the previous sealing that was done by someone who wasn't experienced (family friend).  This guy said they could buff it next time, so that's OK.
They were very responsive to a spot that appeared to not have taken the stain as well as the rest of the deck surface; they came back right away and resolved that."

He is very honest, he does exactly what he says he will do. His cost matches his estimates, no surprise charges. His crew did a great job keeping things cleaned up, and they were very respectful of our property. I would work with Mitch again without any hesitation."

"Really good. Showed up on time, cleaned up as they went, and walls looked really good. Price was what we agreed upon and touch up work was done before leaving. Friendly and easy to deal with. Would hire again."

"Kevin power washed, cleaned, sealed, sanded, and put two coats of stain on our deck. He was extremely professional and easy to work with. He was friendly and detail oriented and really wanted to make sure we were pleased with his work all along the process. Our deck turned out amazing and we strongly recommend him and his company to anyone who needs deck work done. He was also very considerate regarding COVID and masks. Very reasonable pricing and he mentioned that he does many home projects so weâ re looking forward to getting a quote for some other work we need done."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.

A random orbital sander is best for sanding a deck because it is easier to handle than other power sanders and is less likely to damage the wood. Most decks are made of types of softwood, so a gentler sanding process is essential to prevent permanent blemishes. For example, belt sanders can gouge softwoods.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.
