"Good. I started out with HVAC inspection. They wrote a long report on problems and did a show and tell so I could see them for myself. The technician did a soft sell on replacing the HVAC system and referred me to a sales manager for estimates and recommendations. The sales manager also helped me with finding discounts on service beyond just the Angie's list discount. Workers showed up a little before scheduled time and and arranged to call me a half hour before they finished so I could do other things while they worked. (I had moved out of the condo and was fixing it up for sale.) Everyone was hard working and professional. They forgot to install the new thermostat and I called the sales manager who helped me before purchase and he was just as helpful even though I had already paid. They sent someone to do the thermostat installation the next morning at no additional charge."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

You can expect a diesel generator to last for up to 30,000 hours of use, which works out to 20 to 25 years with the proper maintenance, of course. That depends on how much you use it, so a diesel generator used for emergencies a couple of times a year will last a lot longer than a generator that takes over for a faulty electrical grid every month for a day or two.

Portable generators provide backup power for essential appliances during outages and are easy to relocate.

In most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home generators. A permit for a generator usually costs between $50 and $250, depending on where you live. Your electrician or certified generator installer will usually pull the permit for you—and might be required to do so by your building department—but you’ll be on the hook for the cost of the permit. You should ask your installer before agreeing to any work if they will pull the necessary permits for your project.

Yes, in some locations, it is required by the National Electric Code (NEC) to have a transfer switch installed for electrical emergencies. In addition to following electrical code, generator transfer switches ensure your home is fully protected during a power outage. By switching the power from the main breaker to the generator breaker, you can seamlessly operate your HVAC, lights, appliances, devices, and more during an emergency.

Yes. You can connect your home back-up battery to a generator with its designated charger. Be sure that the output of the generator matches the input requirements for the battery for best results.
