"I had been looking for someone to install a driveway for me. I purchased my home in December, 2012 and after two winters removing snow from a gravel driveway, I wanted to have it paved. I obtained two concrete bids and wanted to get asphalt bids to compare. Minnesota Blacktopping was the fifth asphalt company I'd contacted for a bid - and the first one to respond.
After getting a verbal commitment to provide a bid, it required a second call to have them show up and take measurements. While out taking measurements I was given a description of the work that would be done and was told they had other projects that would be done in the area and they'd group them together and do them all at the same time. I was given an estimate as to when that would occur if I wanted to move forward after receiving the quote.
After being told I'd get a written quote, it took an e-mail reminder to have the quote appear in my mailbox. The proposal came with a signature line that also said and quot;acceptance, and quot; so I e-mailed a signed scanned copy and confirmed I wanted to move forward. No down payment was requested.
The next contact I received was a phone call saying they were on the way to my home to do the preparation work for the driveway, would be installing the driveway the next day, and wanted to know if I could meet them when they arrived. Luckily my wife was off that day and was able to meet them when they arrived.
I was able to take the next day off work to be there when they did the installation. They showed up at 7 a.m. and were done by 9:00 a.m. They did an excellent job. The workers were professional and accommodating. I didn't realize they were going to show up so early and hadn't had a chance to move my cars to the road yet - but they made room for me to do that and waited until I was done.
The driveway was exactly what I wanted and it looks fantastic. We didn't drive on it for three days and have had no problems. The driveway was shaped to run rainwater to the low point of my lot and works perfectly. The finish work where the driveway meets the concrete sidewalks and garage openings was done with great care and looks and feels great. The quality of materials and workmanship were excellent. I would highly recommend Minnesota Blacktopping and would not hesitate to use them again.
I ended up with a great driveway from a company I would call first for any future work. The issues I had with communication and expectation setting were minor and did not affect the quality of the end product, but did affect the ratings I gave for responsiveness and professionalism.

"Maletese contracting should be your first choice for their services. I recently hired them to have a complete drain tile system installed and Tom was extremely helpful in helping me understand the process and what the end result would be. His crew works fast, precisely, cleanly and were very accommodating to my needs as well."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

Cobblestone driveways can take a major hit on anyone's bank account, begging the question of whether it's worth it to build a cobblestone driveway. Some homeowners might prefer more affordable driveway materials like concrete or pavers, which can give a similar appearance to cobblestone without the high price tag.

Paving your driveway costs between $2,500 and $6,600, to put that in perspective. But for others, there’s nothing quite like the timeless look of cobblestone driveways.

The ideal distance between stepping stones depends on your design preference. A general rule is to place them about 24 inches apart from center to center to match an average person's stride. Another common approach is to leave about 6 inches of space between the edges of each stone; this can be adjusted to fit the path's total length without cutting pavers. If you plan to plant between the stones, leave at least 6 to 8 inches of space to give the plants room to grow.

Yes, a paved or repaved driveway can boost your home's value by increasing its curb appeal and the functionality of your outdoor space. A new driveway can add anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 to a property's value. An old, crumbling driveway can be a red flag for potential buyers and inspectors.

The amount of value added depends on the materials used, the design, and local market conditions. Concrete is often cited as adding the most value due to its long lifespan, though asphalt may be more desirable in colder climates. The return on investment is greatest when replacing a driveway that is in poor condition; repaving a driveway that is already in good shape will not yield as significant an increase in value.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.
