"Our home has unique textured finishes on the walls and ceilings. We sustained some water damage and had to replace a large section of the kitchen ceiling. We also had several ceiling and wall cracks that needed to be repaired. Garth did all of the plaster work and it matched the existing ceilings and walls perfectly. He also did a new rough plaster finish on our breezeway ceiling to match the adjoining office. He is very talented at what he does, and his pricing was very fair. My contractor warned me that I might not find someone who could do this type of plaster work these days. I was glad that I found Garth and proved him wrong. I recommend Garth without reservation. His work is beautiful."

"Kathryn met with us, bid our job (garage & lower level); explained everything her crew would do plus a timeline. Her crew is excellent, on time & professional. Kathryn & husband are very meticulous with their finishing procedures! Yes, it's wonderful to see a female in a male dominated profession! I highly recommend Performance Plus Drywall, LLC."

"Hired this company to help update my kitchen cabinets. The owner was very good to work with, very accommodating and the crew were amazing! They kept the areas around them cleaned up and respected the home. The cabinets turned out incredible. Very nice finish, they look like glass they are so perfect! Added 2 rooms to be painted which both were done timely and again clean and professional and last had them update our wood fence. Needed to be pressure washed, stained and sealed. Again a great job done. No complaints. Would highly recommend this company for any needs you are needing around the house. Hard to find professional, clean and all around good people and this company had it all! Will be using them again in the future."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Drywall is safe to cut as long as you follow proper procedures, such as wearing personal protective equipment and using the right tools to score and cut the drywall. When cutting new drywall, it can release dust with silica and other compounds that could pose health risks. Leave cutting drywall to the pros, or wear a high-quality respiratory mask, goggles, and other PPE when handling drywall.

A local drywall contractor can texture your drywall for you. Drywall contractors are a better choice than general handy people because the contractors have a lot of experience working with drywall mud. The process is somewhat of an art thanks to the complexity of working with the mud, so call in a drywall pro who knows what they’re doing.

Ceiling-mounted curtains won’t damage the ceiling if they’re installed properly. Using the right anchors or securing the brackets into joists will ensure the curtain weight is properly supported and prevent damage. However, overtightening screws, using weak anchors, or repeatedly removing and reinstalling hardware in the same spot can cause cracking or sagging over time. In that case, you might have to call a pro for ceiling repair.

While a normal moisture level for drywall is between 5% and 12%, replacement is recommended if you get consistent readings above 17%. At this level, the drywall is likely too compromised by extensive moisture damage to be considered safe. You can replace either the entire sheet or just the affected section. If you are unsure after a visual inspection, it is best to have a contractor or water restoration provider use a professional moisture meter to get an accurate reading.

Certain drywall textures, like sand and sometimes popcorn, can be smoothed by applying skim coats, sanding the walls, or chipping away the texture. However, it’s worth considering removing the texture and starting with a blank canvas. Smoothing textured walls requires a lot of sandpaper and elbow grease and can take longer than just outright removing the texture.
