"Our project was actually a crawlspace encapsulation. We have a lake cabin that was built in the 1960's. It had a dirt floor in the crawlspace with bare block masonry foundation walls. It also had old, damp batt insulation that was falling down from the joist spaces. American Waterworks came in, removed the old insulation (a nasty job!), laid down a 2 layer moisture barrier system and spray foamed the foundation walls and rim joist area. I can't believe what a difference this has made to our air quality, much warmer floors. We used to have to wipe down the windows every morning during the winter because of condensation. Not any more! "The installation of the WaterGuard system was completed on Friday, June 10, 2011. The Innovative Basement Systems of Fargo, ND sent out brochures, and a book “Dry Basement Science” so we could familiarize ourselves with the solution to our families water opportunity in the basement on the West side of our home. The representative arrived as schedule to make the measurements and discuss the costs for the project. The representative was not a high pressured salesman. He listened to what we wanted to accomplish, and then said what they could do for us. He stated what additional options that they could offer, but he wasn’t pushy on trying to over sell us thing we didn’t want to commit to for the system we wanted. The three workers were very professional. Laying down drop clothes on the floor and stairways. Sealing adjacent areas off with plastic sheeting from dust from the process of jack hammering the floor. Carefully carrying pieces of concrete floor so as to not strike the walls while taking it out of the house. The masonry worker did a very good job in producing a smooth concrete finish over the floor to seal the WaterGuard System. The clean up was great. First they sweep the area, and finished up washing the floor with water, and squeegeeing.
The test came with a heavy rain, and the water flowed to the sump basket, and not out on to the floor.
I am very pleased by the professionalism I saw from Innovative Basement Systems, and would recommend their services to others. What and when they said they would do, they did as scheduled.

For that reason, you should take extra care when scoring and striking, and expect a higher chance of breakage. If a brick feels especially fragile, score deeper before attempting to split it.
Removing paint from brick can have both aesthetic and practical value. Some people prefer the timeless look of bare brick, making it worthwhile to remove old paint layers. Brick also lasts longer when unpainted, as paint traps moisture, causing the brick to deteriorate more quickly. If your brick walls are already in bad shape, stripping the paint off might do more harm than good.

Some older brick material is extremely hard, making it tough to create a hole. Rather than using a typical wood drill bit, always use a masonry drill bit when drilling into brick. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.
You should generally drill into the mortar joints when installing shutters on brick. Mortar is softer, which makes drilling easier and puts less strain on your tools. It also lowers the risk of cracking a brick—something that’s a lot harder to fix. Mortar holds fasteners well enough for standard shutters, and if you ever need to patch the holes later, it’s a much simpler job than dealing with damaged brick. Just keep in mind that if your mortar joints are too thin or the hardware calls for brick anchoring, you'll need to check the manufacturer’s recommendations and adjust accordingly.
