"I am particularly impressed with the followup maintence provided by servieman David Kotke. He installed the dehumidifier that needed to be replaced and he has provided the yearly maintenance that clears any debris out of the channels. He clearly explained what he was doing, did it in an efficient manner and was friendly."

"From start to finish, Kevin and his crew are the best in the business. Very thorough communication and seeing things through to the end. Kevin is very attentive to concerns and very reassuring. Nobody in this company’s line of work could possibly match what drain services has going on. They have a great culture. Strongly recommend."

"We are very happy with the job Hal and his team did. It is clear that Hal takes great pride in his work, and it shows in his craftsmanship and his attention to detail. What's more, they were all nice to have around--always polite and considerate.

Design-wise, our situation is a difficult one: Our backyard is like a "fish bowl" with the way houses and yards surround our property; further, the space lacks definition. Hal worked with us to figure out the best way to solve these issues while beautifying the space. The structures themselves are attractive and extremely well built. For example, he used mortise and tenon joints to attach cross-members, while the posts are footed in concrete that drops below the frost line (we have a lot of clay in our yard, which can weak havoc on structures that aren't properly installed). There are not too many fence-building companies (if any) that will do that, yet those other companies charge at least as much as Hal.

The only reason I didn't give a perfect grade is we did hit a few minor snags in communication. Communication is a two-way street, of course, so this is as much our fault as Hal's. If plans would have been drawn up beforehand, these snags probably could have been avoided. We ended up with a few surprises because everything hinged on conversations, written descriptions and references to photos from other jobs he's done. This is why "Punctuality" is a B (it isn't clear where "communication" fits into Angie's rating).

Having said that, we are hiring Hal again to do more work. Whatever small communication issues we had I expect will be gone this next time (it's like getting to know someone), and the quality of Hal's work is really impressive."

"AHS is ok. They cover repairs of most everything under the roof of your house. The companies that contract with them are not always the best. You call AHS with the issue, they send a fax to the repair company and give you the contact info. If they don't contact you within 24 hours, you call them. Sometimes they answer, sometimes they don't. When they arrive (usually three days or so later), they service the item. if it has issues within the 90 days, you call AHS again, they are sent out with no charge. If the serviceman decides the unit is unrepairable, AHS will allow you to choose a replacement from their listing (usually not as good as what you have) they will install and remove your old item, or give you wholesale amount to buy and install your own. Prices vary on what you want covered and what you want the copay to be, plus where you live. For me it is 49.99 per month with a 75.00 time of service order. You can have more than one item serviced at the same time under the same fee. If you have a SEAR product the repair guys are great. Not that wild about the other ones they send out. But it is a big savings compared to calling someone on your own. The cost of service is only the 75.00 copay."

Drain Pipe Installation questions, answered by experts

If you've discovered a rather frightening buildup of brown and black gunk below your shower cover, you're not alone. The smelly sludge is often a collection of mildew and biofilm. Biofilm comes from the breakdown of soap scum, hair, skin cells, and bacteria that collects during shower time. It's quite common in a humid space and relatively easy to clean with a gentle DIY cleaning solution such as baking soda and vinegar.

A bit of water in the bowl can help unclog a toilet, especially if you're using a plunger. However, if the bowl is full to the brim, you'll need to strap on gloves and remove some of the wastewater in a cup or container so it doesn't overflow when you try to unblock the pipe. If you're concerned about it filling further, manually close the flapper in the toilet tank or turn off the water supply to the toilet.

A saturated leach field can result from various underlying issues, so it's best to call a professional septic company to diagnose and treat the problem. Depending on the cause of the saturation, potential fixes include pumping out a full septic tank, adding more bacteria to the tank, or regrading the soil to fix low spots. It may also be necessary to reroute rainwater and runoff away from the leach field using gutters, downspouts, and extenders. Once the primary issue is resolved, planting specific types of vegetation over the area can help absorb excess water. In more severe cases, you might need to install a larger septic tank or replace the leach field entirely.

You can unclog a double kitchen sink by plunging the side with the garbage disposal. Cover the drain hole on the other side first to avoid creating a mess. Plunge up and down until the water starts to drain. You can also pour in baking soda and vinegar to try and dissolve a clog.

If you're dealing with a clogged sink drain, you may be able to avoid removing the drain by using a plunger to dislodge the clog. While we associate plungers with toilets, they can do the same job with your sink drain. Be gentle, though, as forceful movements can push clogs further into your plumbing system and make them more difficult to remove. Additionally, make sure you’re using a sink plunger—with a flat bottom—and not a toilet plunger—which has a smaller bottom protruding from the larger flat piece.
