Because air ducts can irritate those with asthma or respiratory issues, you’ll need to consider your health situation to decide if this is worth the expense. (Hint: It usually is.)

Mold in HVAC ducts is a relatively common issue that homeowners struggle with—especially in humid climates or homes with poor ventilation. Moisture from condensation, combined with dust and organic debris, creates the perfect environment for mold growth. Homes with high humidity, leaky ducts, or clogged drains are more prone to this issue. Regular inspections and proper HVAC maintenance significantly reduce the risk of mold developing in your ducts.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.
