"Terrible. I paid 3 times to have them out here. Was told I need a permit.. another $200... but they couldn't even fix it . Told by another business did not need drain field repaired... the drain field was dry. Waste of almost $1000 total. NEVER EVER AGAIN."

I. should have followed my friends advice and we t elsewhere now I'm locked in this stupid overpriced loan/quote repeated.calls go unanswered... Coldest part of the year afraid waiting is going to damage other pipes most my house plants.are dying and.weare freezing"

While not every clog has the same symptoms, the most common early sign that your main sewer line is clogged is that multiple drains in your home are draining slowly. You may also notice gurgling and odors from drains. If your plumbing system's drain cleanout is backing up with water, this is also a sign of a clog or blockage.

Sometimes, the drain is just too clogged—thanks, stubborn hair and soap scum. In this case, you’ll need a more powerful drain cleaner than you can DIY safely at home. But this doesn’t mean you have to choose a traditional drain cleaner. 

You can find biodegradable drain cleaners at your local home improvement store or online for those drains that need a little more oomph. 

While on the hunt for a formidable drain cleaner, the best options are non-chemical clog solutions that combine enzymes and bacteria.

Thankfully, it’s pretty rare to find a rat in your toilet. It’s more likely in larger cities with big sewer systems that can be feeding grounds for rats, but even then, you still shouldn’t fret. 

“I wouldn’t worry too much about rats coming up through the sewers,” Bradshaw says. “I’d say only one out of a thousand rodent customers we get actually have this problem. And of the 20 or some customers that have had this happen, they’ve all only had just one rat come up this way.”

If you want to avoid using a snake to unclog a drain, or if you don’t have one, try vinegar and baking soda. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait for 15 minutes, and then run hot water (but not boiling water) down the drain to see if the clog is clear. Repeat multiple times as needed.

A sewer line should be cleaned at least once every 18 to 22 months. The process takes about 30 minutes or up to 5 hours, depending on the size of the line, how easy it is to access, and how long it’s been since the previous cleaning. If your sewer line hasn’t been cleaned in a couple of years or you don’t even know the last time it’s been cleaned, it’s time to call a pro.
