"We loved the pitch of the salesman who sold us on getting new carpet. But, the lack of communication caused us to think twice about ever hiring them again. To our surprise, they reached back out to make amends and went above the call of duty."

"Active Home Savers did an amazing job on my lawn. They took care of everythingâ mowing, maintenance, weed whacking, edging, and cleanup. The mowing was perfect, with even cuts that made my lawn look great. They were thorough with maintenance, ensuring my grass stayed healthy. The weed whacking and edging were done with precision, leaving clean lines around my garden beds and walkways. Cleanup was spotless, and the crew was professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. I'm very happy with their work and highly recommend them for reliable lawn care."

"I took advantage of the 8-hour labor special sometimes advertised on Angieslist, which advertises yard clean up or other basic maintenance services. Scheduling was easy, even when some unexpected matters at work caused a need to move it out a few days. The crew of two arrived on time, and got a good understanding of both the work and the priorities. As it turned out, we did not quite get all the work done in the four "clock hours" spent, but it was stopped at a good breaking point and they were busy throughout the time, and did a very thorough job despite some fences, branches and twigs from the wind storm the prior week, etc. All leaves were hauled off. Everyone I've dealt with has been courteous and knowledgeable and seems eager to help. Also met briefly with their landscape consultant who had some good ideas which I'm hoping to move forward with later in the season. Overall, I would recommend them to others. I was impressed with the service and have already scheduled some other work. The prices are pretty reasonable, especially when considering everything went smoothly."

"I will always use this company. My deck needed a good wash-trees & mud/dirt with no grass is a terrible combo. Lath called the day I put the call out. He came 2 days later. He was very punctual and got it done quickly---including the back siding of my condo. He was respectful, efficient, and friendly. His prices are very reasonable. I had a job that needed to be done quickly. Lath came through for me."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

There are several perks to building a deck around your inground or above-ground pool. Specifically, building a deck around a pool gives you space to lounge and sunbathe, easy access to monitor kids in the pool, extra room for entertaining and dining, an anti-slip surface for post-pool fun, and enhanced aesthetics.

Both a well-constructed deck and a patio can add value to your home. Patios are generally cheaper to build but don’t offer the same aesthetics as a quality deck. Therefore, decks can be more appealing to buyers than patios, increasing a home's resale value.

Composite decking is the best material for individuals living with disabilities who want to age in place. The material is anti-slip, which increases safety throughout the year. It’s also highly durable and requires minimal maintenance, so it doesn’t add another item to the individual’s to-do list. It’s also a good option for improving wheelchair accessibility at home, as it can easily manage a wheelchair ramp.

Whether you need a permit depends on the deck design and local regulations. Most areas mandate a building permit if the deck is over a specific height or if it's attached to a pre-existing structure. Shorter, freestanding decks may not require a permit, but you should check with local zoning ordinances and your homeowners association for specifics.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.
