"The first thing that the old man did was come into our home and insult me. To make it worse, his slander was done in front of others. Next he left mud everywhere he went, forcing us to clean up after him. Then he required the pump to be pulled from the well and a new part fitted because his old one failed. Not done for free, that's for sure. He could not remember the information about the well. Instead he relies upon some scribbling he does on the pressure tank. He does not use a professional-looking sticker on the front of the tank. Instead his scribbles are on the back, so that when the tank is repositioned properly during remodel, he complains he can't read it. Talk about unprofessional. I recommend this company to be avoided at all costs."

If you notice any changes to the water coming from your well, consider that a sign to get a well inspection. For example, if the water is foul-smelling, bad-tasting, cloudy, or discolored, you should call a pro. It’s also a good idea to schedule an inspection if you observe a loss of water pressure, broken equipment, loss of well capacity, or other unusual signs.

How do you set your well’s pressure tank? All you need to do is first drain the tank of water and find the pressure switch. Remove the switch cover and adjust the switch with a wrench—clockwise to increase water pressure, and counter-clockwise to reduce it. Each complete turn of the nut on the switch should equal 2.5 psi. Once this is done, replace the switch cover. All that’s left is to adjust the pressure of the tank itself using an air compressor and a tire gauge to support the new setting.

If your well pump gets stuck in its casing, you may be able to free it loose by gently wiggling the line or by vibrations from tapping the line with a hammer. However, if your pump is stuck in a buildup of minerals around the casing, you’ll probably have to call in a well pump contractor to get it out. They’ll likely use a muriatic acid solution—a strong, corrosive acid—to break down the minerals and free the pump loose. 

To avoid a stuck pump in the future, experts recommend a professional well cleaning once every 10 years. 

The average three to four-bedroom home uses a well pump of 8 to 12 GPM. It’s recommended to calculate your own GPM based on the number of water fixtures in your home so you can find the pump size that’s most accurate to your needs.

The disadvantages of having a well include more maintenance, like annual testing and inspections, and high up-front costs to drill a well. Well water is also vulnerable to contamination, which is why keeping up with testing is important if you own a well. When it comes to well water versus city water, well water does offer more independence and is a reliable water source.
