"Friendly and on time for appointments. Did an outstanding job powerwashing and staining my large deck. They also went out of their way to make sure the extra repairs needed were done correctly. I have had nothing but compliments on the change in the appearance of my deck."

Customers say: Quick response

"I made a request for the work on Saturday Feb 14 on the Angi website. Five companies were suggested. I contacted three. Within ten minutes I got a call from Franz Muller at PLC Handyman. I described the work, he quoted $250, and said he could come take a look at 3 pm today. He and his partner arrived at 2:30 pm, came in, had a look, confirmed the $250 quote, I gave them the go-ahead, and they left for Lowe s to get materials. They came back with six doorknobs. Franz took his planer to the top of the sticking door. I asked if he shouldn t take the door off to do that and he said no. The planer chipped the paint on the sides, broke off twi sizeable chips on the end and made a sawdust mess on the wall, the top of a dresser, and the carpet. Meanwhile his partner removed one doorknob and said there was a problem. The doors were old and not standard. They needed a kit to cut bigger holes for the new knobs. As they left, Franz announced this would double his original quote to $500. Caught off guard with the work already started, what was I to say? I told them proceed. They headed back to Lowe s. They returned with the kit, some superglue to repair the door chips, and an additional knob because they only bought six originally (I had shown them there were seven). Franz glued the chips and then left my house. His partner did all the doorknob work. I helped him a little by removing strikes and cleaning up sawdust messes. He said Franz had gone to get something to eat. When most of the knobs were replaced, Franz reappeared, hung around, then used my bathroom without asking. He left a big mess in my toilet and didn t bother to turn on a fan. When all the knobs were replaced and checked, Franz announced the fee was $500 plus the two Lowe s invoices ($150). I said I wasn t clear that the quote didn t include parts, but I wrote a check to him for $650. I got no written receipt, no warranty, and all the old knobs were left for me to dispose of. My wife and I did all the cleanup of sawdust and debris. I had to touch-up paint the door. The whole job seemed to be handled in a messy and rushed fashion. Nothing in writing. Messes left. No offer to remove or cover wet shoes. Even the kit I paid for was not offered to be left. They kept it. This is my first use of Angi. I guess I thought vendors were pre-screened so these kinds of problems would not occur."

"Scott did an excellent job painting and repairing the walls in my 1890's Victorian home. He was on time, clean, pleasant, and worked every day. He was careful to tell me ahead of time what he could or could not do. As you may know, old homes such as these require special attention. The original baseboards, chair rails, and multi-layered moldings were caulked in every small seam before painting: They look brand new. Some baseboards that were warped and pulling away from the wall were removed from the lath-&-plaster, the wall scraped and sanded, reattached, allowing for a neat seam along the wall and paint interface. Dental trim was painted such that the right amount of shadow emphasized the detail. He repaired a very bad wall overlying a chimney by placing a 1/8" plasterboard over it. He hand scraped some oak-paneled doors and refinished them. The one door that could not be done perfectly he warned me about ahead of time. He has a very good eye for color. He repaired 2 fairly long cracks in the plaster lathe walls by removing the larger area of unattached lathe, screwing the remaining wall down, and patching with wallboard. He did NOT just scrape out the crack and refill it with sparkle, as most other would have done. He did the right job so it won't happen again. He cleaned up every day and was done a week ahead of schedule."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Because adding a deck will yield a higher property value, you may have higher insurance costs. It’s important to follow the codes and regulations set by your local and state governments, so your insurance rates can be properly calculated. You may need an insurance revaluation after your deck is completed. The best course of action is to speak with an insurance professional to understand how adding a deck will impact your home’s insurance costs before you begin.

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

Yes, pressure washing a wood deck can be a good idea as it effectively lifts ingrained dirt, mold, and mildew, improving the deck's appearance and longevity. However, it must be done carefully, as it's easy to damage the wood, especially softwoods. To pressure wash safely, use a lower pressure setting and a wide, 40-degree fan pattern nozzle (often white). Keep the nozzle at least a foot away from the wood surface and maintain constant motion, avoiding hovering in one spot to prevent gouging.

While the terms deck and porch are often used interchangeably, they are two distinct structures. A porch is a covered structure, usually attached to the front of a home, that offers protection from the elements. In contrast, a deck is an open, uncovered platform, often attached to the back or side of a home. Because porches have a roof, they typically require less maintenance than decks, but both features need regular cleaning and repairs to stay in good condition.

Composite decking is the best material for individuals living with disabilities who want to age in place. The material is anti-slip, which increases safety throughout the year. It’s also highly durable and requires minimal maintenance, so it doesn’t add another item to the individual’s to-do list. It’s also a good option for improving wheelchair accessibility at home, as it can easily manage a wheelchair ramp.
