"We had a very large, very long horizontal crack in our wall. Jacob W. was great. He answered all my husbands questions and worked his butt off. Along with Austin H. and Denzel K. The cleaned up everything when the job was done too. I would give them a 10/10 and would recommend them to anyone that needed foundation work done."

"H&B did a great job repairing an old stone/ concrete porch for us. They were upfront about the cost of the repair and finished on time. We had some stones missing before their repair and they took the time to select fieldstones that would fit in the empty spaces. They took the time to hand select similar sized stones. They cleaned up the space and went above and beyond! Would highly recommend."

"Community Construction replaced my roof as well as did interior ceiling repair for water damage. Everyone was very professional and courteous. Each team of workers completed cleaned up each day and went out of their way to make sure that I was happy with all the work that was being done! I would highly recommend Community Construction for any construction project you need done! The owner Will was very responsive to phone calls and texts. So was project manager Devin. "Easy experience. Great salesman lol but the workers were awesome and really respectful. They messed up once on some of my city piping, but they came out the same day and fixed it with no questions or complaints. Nice to know my basement is warranted for the rest of the life of the house."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Brick stain doesn’t peel or chip and is much more durable than painting. That’s because the staining is absorbed into the brick instead of lingering on the surface as paint does. The color retains even under extreme weather conditions. Therefore, brick stain will save you a lot of time and cost on maintenance in the long run.

A traditional rectangular brick that is used for siding, brick walks, and pathways is 8 inches long by 4 inches wide. If you are shopping for fire bricks, the standard dimension is typically 9 inches long by 4.5 inches wide.

Yes, you can limewash surfaces other than brick. Plaster, stone, stucco, and concrete can all also be limewashed. Any porous surface that will absorb the wash is a good candidate for limewash, although it won’t help much with waterproofing. If you choose to limewash over paint, you’ll need to prep before applying it to avoid a powdery, chalky finish. Shiny surfaces like metal or glass can’t absorb limewash, so it’s not suited for these.

If your old bricks are in decent condition and you have the space to store them where they’ll be protected from the elements, keeping old bricks is often worthwhile. You’d spend anywhere from $70 to a few hundred dollars to have them removed from your property, in which case you won’t be able to use them for future projects. Holding on to old bricks in good condition means you can use them later for other DIY projects, potentially saving yourself some money on disposal and new materials down the road.

Yes, an outdoor fireplace should use fire bricks. Fire bricks are specially designed to withstand high levels of heat and thus won’t crack as easily as regular bricks when exposed to the intense heat inside a fireplace.
