"We are happy with the quality of the pool, but not happy with the experience of working with Midwest. They did not communicate or coordinate well, and they made decisions on our behalf (like what tile to install in the pool) without consulting us. Mistakes were made with the concrete surround and their attitude seemed to be 'oh well'. It seems like the only reason we were actually able to get them to complete all of the work was because we withheld final payment until everything was complete."

Patios questions, answered by experts

Some patios will cause your property taxes to increase, while others will not. A good rule of thumb is that if your patio requires a permit, your taxes will increase. That’s because permits are necessary for “permanent” land improvements, and your taxes are based partially on improvements. Something like a concrete patio that’s considered permanent will bump up your property taxes, while a “temporary” paver patio or flagstone patio will not negatively affect your taxes. Keep in mind that this can vary, so always contact your building department to see if your patio project will affect your taxes.

No, high labor costs and the project's complexity make concrete stairs more expensive than steel or wood stairs. Wood steps cost between $100 and $200 per step, including labor and materials, while concrete steps are about triple, at between $200 and $600 per step. Building codes may also have stricter requirements for concrete steps, as they’re considered permanent, so you might also pay more for permits.

While it may be less expensive initially to lay concrete vs. pavers, the long-term expenses that come with repairing concrete may prove to be less cost-friendly than simply replacing a few damaged pavers. On top of that, stamped concrete may only last for 25 years compared to pavers, which can last over 50 years.

DIY is possible for small jobs, but professionals ensure durability, proper grading, and compliance with safety codes.

It’s possible to pour concrete if the temperatures are expected to dip below freezing at night, but you need to take some special precautions before you do. Most importantly, you need to make sure your concrete won’t freeze, so the best thing to do is enclose the area and heat it. You should also make sure you’re using cold-weather concrete that’s designed for pouring in cold weather. Use accelerants to help speed up the curing process and avoid cold temperatures from resulting in weak concrete.
