"Tim at Michigan Custom Fence, and his crew!, did an outstanding job with our fence project. We have a husky that was escaping from our chain link fence, and we had zero peace of mind letting her outside off-leash. Not only is our finished product beautiful, Tim takes the â customâ part very seriously; we tossed some curveballs his way, to say the least. The fence looks amazing and we cannot wait to bring the husky back there to run around(and realize that she canâ t go wander the neighborhood). I cannot recommend Michigan Custom Fence enough. You will receive a quality product from genuinely good people. Thank you, Tim!!"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The standard height for a split rail fence is three or four feet. This height requires two to three horizontal rails, making it ideal for homeowners wanting a budget-friendly split rail fence. If you’re hoping to contain agile livestock or animals like dogs, geese, or goats, you may prefer to install a six-foot tall fence with four or five rails or a four-foot-tall fence with three horizontal rails. This will help prevent animals from climbing, crawling, or jumping through the rails.

The cheapest fence to install is likely to be a wire fence, whether it’s hog wire or chicken wire. Closely following that is something repurposed that would be free to collect, like a DIY pallet fence. Most wire fences are available in large quantities at a low cost, so they’re great for homes with a tight budget.

The average cost to install a fence is between $1,800 and $4,500. However, the price can vary significantly based on several factors. For a small DIY project, costs could be as low as $450, while fencing a large property like a 5-acre yard can exceed $43,000. Key factors that influence the total cost include the fence's size and height, the material used, the complexity of the design, site preparation needs, and any additional features like gates. The cost of raw materials, manufacturing, and custom fabrication can also impact the final price.

Yes, you can expect your composite fencing to fade quickly during the first six months. This happens naturally because the wood oils in the fencing material, called tannins, bleed out. Because of this, it can help to get a color chart from your fence company, which should show you the color of your fence before and after it fades.

Retaining walls offer more value to a home if they also divert water, prevent erosion, or help support a foundation. The ROI of a retaining wall is between 100% and 200%.

Both fences and walls can increase your home’s value, but you’ll spend significantly more on a wall than you would on a fence. A stone wall costs approximately $5,000, a retaining wall costs $6,100, and a fence costs $3,200 on average to put prices in perspective.
