Customers say: True professional

"Our house has been completely transformed and we are very happy with the outcome. Dave's work and professionalism is exceptional. He operates on the principle as if he's working on his own home. He cares. He will redo completed work if it's not right. Can't beat that. He responds very quickly to phone calls and text messages. I would highly recommend Diamondwood Inc."

Customers say: Quick response

"Rick Sievers, General Contractor and Owner of Bay Ridge Development Inc., provided everything he promised in his bid with skill, flexibility, organization and constant communication. As is probably true with any remodel, we requested changes at various intervals throughout and Rick handled those requests with grace and showed his ability to be flexible. He is extremely skilled and always strove for perfection in his own performance as well as the performance of the specialty services he hired. Rick performed most of the work himself, so he was onsite the majority of the time, and when a specialty service was required, he hired people who worked to his high standards. Rick's organization and communication skills are wonderful and were very much appreciated from day one. There were absolutely no surprises due to Rick's ability to communicate throughout our remodel. Rick was a pleasure to interact with, from beginning to end, and we won't hesitate to request his services in the future. We absolutely love the end result! "I could not be more pleased with my home remodel and construction of a new storage shed performed by Bob Thornton. The remodeled area matches perfectly with my existing home. No one would ever know that the remodeled living space was not part of the original home. The new storage shed aligns seamlessly with the architecture of my existing home, including roof pitch, vinyl siding, shingles, windows and door. Bob has in-depth knowledge of all aspects of construction, from foundation to finish-carpentry and all steps in between, including plumbing, electrical, mechanical, flooring and drywall. I threw a lot of curve balls at Bob during the construction, and he handled them all in a kind and professional manner. He worked with me throughout the building process to ensure I would be pleased with the final results. The work was performed promptly and within budget. What stands out the most is Bobs attention to detail, quality craftsmanship and use of superior materials. Bob exceeded my expectations and made the entire process fun. I was almost sad when the work was completed, as it was such a pleasure working with Bob and his crew. I would not think of hiring anyone else for any future projects. I highly recommend Bob Thorton for any job, big or small."

"I recently had the pleasure of working with North West Home Solutions, and I couldn’t be more impressed with their work in restoring our basement. From the very beginning, their team was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly attentive to detail. They took the time to listen to our needs and concerns, offering expert advice on the best way to approach the restoration. The project was completed on time, and the crew made sure to keep everything clean and organized throughout the process. What really stood out was their commitment to ensuring everything was done right, and they didn’t cut corners."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

The average build timeline for a home is between six and 12 months, with timelines pushing toward the upper end of that range if you’re creating a custom design or need a lot of land preparation before getting started. Hiring a general contractor or a custom homebuilder will help speed up the process, as you’ll see fewer delays between different parts of the build process getting done.

Ranch and colonial-style homes are often the most affordable to build. They have a common layout with available designs that are easy to adjust in simple ways without having to spend too much on a structural engineer or architect. Both types of homes' symmetry, simple roofs, and often one or two-story plans mean they often fall in the $150 to $200 square-foot range, putting them right around average.

Framing is often the most expensive phase of building a house because it’s time-consuming and requires a lot of materials. It costs between $20,000 and $50,000 on average, depending on materials and labor costs. Before construction begins, it’s possible that purchasing land is the priciest step in the process. Some plots of land sell for $3,000, while others cost upwards of $150,000.

There are energy-efficient options when building a cottage. Select green building materials, high-performance insulation, and energy-efficient windows when designing your cottage. Options such as solar panels, efficient HVAC systems, and LED lighting can lower your utility bills and reduce your environmental impact. Many builders offer energy-efficient upgrades as part of the design process.

A contractor can install your shipping container home in as little as 90 days. This is notably quick compared to a traditional home build, which can take more than a year (providing there aren’t permitting or construction delays that make the wait even longer). For the quickest installation, choose a prefab container home.
