Solar screens use a thick mesh of polyester to block out the UV waves and solar heat. While they are more expensive at about $7.50 per square foot, they can protect your porch or hardwood floors from sun damage and keep the room or porch on the other side of the patio cool.

If your door has interchangeable inserts, you’ll likely want to swap the glass out for a screen during the summer months. To install the spline on a screen door, you’ll need a spline roller—a tool that presses the spline and screen into the door’s narrow groove. Note that old spline can crack and break, so replacing your screens is a good time to replace the spline, too.

If you’re not keen on using a traditional doggie door, there are some alternatives. One popular option is a solid, insulated door that you can lock when you’re out of the home for added security. You can also opt for a doggie screen, which you can lift and lower to allow your pooch access to the outdoors. These are a bit more convenient to use than a regular exterior door, although security could be an issue. You can also install a screen door with a small opening for your pup to prevent bugs from coming inside as your dog exits.

If your winter looks like heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures, taking your screens out for the season can be a great way to avoid mesh damage or bent frames. Ice can build up and put pressure on the screen, especially in older or aluminum frames.
