J&M was created as a business that will eventually be handed down to my sons. The tasks the business handles are those that require general building and maintenance skills. Any skills acquired for these jobs were ones that I learned from my dad or grandfather, both of which were licensed builders. I stand behind all work the business does with a 100% money back guarantee.

"We hired Hain Property Services to power-wash and stain/water-seal our large deck. When initially contacting them for an estimate, they were very prompt with scheduling and providing the estimate. The estimate was detailed and the final cost did not exceed their projection. We have a relatively large deck with a lot of details, and they were very thorough and careful throughout the process and made sure no spots were missed. All of the work crews were very professional and unobtrusive, and after each visit they were thorough with their clean-up. Hain Property Services provided a lot of useful advice for maintaining the life of our deck, and we will definitely rely on their services again in the future. We are very satisfied with their services and certainly feel we got our money's worth.

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Deck skirting shouldn’t touch the ground, especially if you have a wood deck, which is vulnerable to moisture. Ideally, you should leave at least 3/4 of an inch of space between the deck skirting and the ground for more ventilation. Pros also recommend that you incorporate about 1 square foot of space for ventilation for the underside of the deck to every 150 square feet of decking. Proper ventilation prevents mold growth and rot that can damage your deck.

Yes, using sustainable materials and recycled composites offer green solutions.

Most building codes list a minimum width of 36 inches and a maximum height of 7¾ inches. However, for the most comfort and spaciousness, you’ll want to aim for a width of at least 48 inches and a height of 7 inches. Again, it’s always a good idea to base your numbers off steps that you already use comfortably.

A deck is typically attached to a house and accessed via the back door. Decks are usually constructed from wood or composite materials. A terrace, on the other hand, is a raised platform that can be attached to or detached from the house and is typically made from a hard-paved material, such as paving stones. Terraces can be built on the ground or on the roof of a home.

Before installing a deck, you must build a base for the deck to rest upon, often made of compacted soil or gravel. While gravel is an optional material, it helps with drainage. Some contractors also recommend installing a weed control membrane, which helps provide a solid foundation for the frame. In the case of an elevated deck, a pro will often lay down a concrete slab as a foundation.
