"The company has remodeled my master bathroom with quality jobs recently. The technicians are very knowledgeable and experienced. The best part I like is the customer service. Whenever I call and no matter what I want to talk, I can get reply with all the information I need. When I asked for reconnecting one of the water lines, they spent a lot of extra effort to let it done in a timely manner."

"Kevin is professional, reliable and friendly. He did exactly what he said he would and within the agreed upon schedule. He even went above and beyond on a few smaller tasks throughout the project. I would highly recommend him and his team for home improvement projects."

"High Standard went above and beyond. They arrived on time daily, were professional and had great communication keeping me informed every step of the way. My ceiling is beautiful and no longer sagging. The popcorn is gone and High Standard was able to the esthetic of my older home by working in my current crown molding even though there was going to be a large gap. Thank you for a job well done."

"Went great! Jake came to give me a estimate and I told him I had another company coming out. I called to give them the job and they started when they said. Did a great job and cleaned up so well, I would have never known they were there. Will be calling him for my kitchen remodel!"

"Kyle and James did such an excellent job on the ceiling drywall job I originally hired them to do that I hired them again for a second and third project. Not only is their work top notch, they keep the multi-day projects moving along. We were very impressed with their work ethic of being on time, keeping us informed of their schedule, respecting the rest of the house (protective covers, etc.) and thoroughly cleaning up. This work ethic is what separates Kyle and James from other contractors I have used in the past. I have already recommended them to others and will most likely being hiring them again."

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Because of the nature of the texture, it's common for the popcorn texture to loosen while painting. Popcorn ceilings are delicate, and using a heavy hand with a roller or applying overly wet paint can loosen the texture. To avoid a mess, handle the material gently with a roller or brush. It's also smart to test a small area first, and if the texture starts coming off, the ceiling may need repairs or sealing before painting.

The average popcorn ceiling removal costs around $2,000, but prices can range from $950 to $3,100, depending on the size, accessibility, and whether or not there’s asbestos or lead paint.

We don’t recommend DIYing this project to save money, but you can DIY the prep work to speed things up. Consider removing furniture, ceiling lights, and other fixtures before the workers arrive on site. To be extra helpful, cover any remaining belongings with plastic tarps and secure them with tape.

In most cases, it is worth removing popcorn ceilings because they are considered outdated and can make a home more difficult to sell. Buyers typically prefer a smooth, modern finish, so removing the texture can increase a home's value and appeal. The necessity can sometimes depend on the housing market; in a competitive market, buyers may be more willing to overlook minor renovations. The most critical factor is the potential presence of asbestos, which is common in older popcorn ceilings and poses a significant health hazard if the material deteriorates. If you know your ceiling contains asbestos, you are required to disclose this when selling, which can be a major deterrent for buyers. In this situation, it is highly recommended to have a professional remove or encapsulate the ceiling to resolve the issue before it impacts the sale.

While you should consult with a ceiling professional for larger cracks, especially if you’re not sure what’s causing your ceiling to crack, you can certainly try to repair small cracks on your own. If you’re up for the task, here’s how to repair ceiling cracks for $150 or less.

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity due to their outdated appearance, difficult maintenance, and potential health risks. Ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos, which poses a serious health hazard if disturbed. As design trends have shifted towards sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now favor smoother ceilings that offer a cleaner look and easier upkeep.

However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as acoustic dampening and the ability to hide imperfections. Some people also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective option. Ultimately, whether a popcorn ceiling is 'bad' depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and the overall aesthetic of the home.
