"Gary is very knowledgeable in his field of expertise. He is also extremely respectful and very punctual. He is quick to respond with both text and phone calls. His quote was fast and very reasonable. He has his calendar available to make your appointment. Gary is also a very hard worker and cleans up after completing the job. It s like you never knew he was there. We spoke about several projects that I need accomplished and l definitely will hire him again. One of the biggest is he is licensed and insured. All around he is the best."

"Very polite and helpful. I would recommend to anyone needing work done. I appreciate their ability to accommodate for my preference to text due to often being in and out of meetings at work. They cleaned up the area afterwards very nicely. The work was done quickly and very well."

Small jobs welcome

"Jim was very professional in his initial and follow-up contacts leading up to the project. He provided a complete estimate, gave good advice on material purchases and was responsive to my scheduling needs. We did have to work around some of Jim's family activities but he gave me plenty of prior notice and was flexible with me in rescheduling work days. On the job, Jim and his partner were very task oriented, aways appropriate in behavior and punctual. Again, any changes in schedule were communicated in advance. The work site was cleaned each day. I would hire him again without reservations."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Pressure-treated decking may be worth it if you want a natural, insect- and rot-resistant decking material that will last for decades with proper maintenance. As such, it’s a much better option than untreated pine. Alternative wood decking materials like cedar and redwood tend to be less durable and more expensive. Some homeowners prefer composite decking, which is a low-maintenance alternative to wood but is also more costly.

Cutting the boards directly is one of the fastest ways to remove deck boards with hidden fasteners. Mark two parallel lines that are one-third of the total measurement on both ends and cut out the centerpiece. Then, remove the end of the board that doesn’t have a fastener. Finally, pry open the fastened side and pull it up to pop out the screw or access the fastener. This also allows you to salvage portions of boards for other projects.

In the majority of cases, you don’t need regulatory permission or permits to remove decking components and materials. However, the exception is if you live in or near a wildlife conservation area, which could require permits and consent prior to beginning the demolition. Check with a local regulatory agency for more information.

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.
