Family owned and operated. Lake Michigan Mechanical has been proudly serving the Grand Rapids area with high-quality plumbing, heating, and air conditioning services with a commitment to old-fashioned service and values. Additional contact - (616) 540-9960.

"Very poor quality business. When I asked about Freon, Daniel VanderHyde lied and said he checked it. (Security camera!). Rather than own up, Daniel opted for not repairable and I am out $600. They have been a nightmare! BBB gives them an F. Not accredited!"

"Customer service is great. The Service Technician Michael Toddy explained step by step the process of replacing my water heater. Once completed he went over the new fixtures because it's been 26 years since a new Bradford White was installed. Michael is very kind and courteous and finished in a timely manner. I will have them fix my future plumbing issues. Thank you Bergsma Plumbing and Michael Toddy."

"Very high rates comparatively for mid grade work. Upcharged on parts at an unethical rate. They replaced the faucet in my kitchen with a very generic mid-level unit and charged near $200 for the faucet and another $350 for the 2 hours of time. There are better options around the city and you're encouraged to look them up! If you do use them, get everything in writing BEFORE they do any work."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The cost to clean a sewer line is about $370, ranging from about $190 to $550 on average. The specific cleaning method and the problem's severity will impact the project's overall cost. Some of the most common sewer line cleaning methods include:

  • Snaking or rodding: $100–$250

  • Hydrojetting: $350–$600

  • Chemical treatments: $600–$1,000

  • Repair or replacement: $1,000–$7,500

One way to save money on sewer lines is to install a sewer cleanout since it makes sewer line maintenance easier. Keeping up with maintenance is key to reducing the cost of repairs, so be sure to schedule annual plumbing inspections, install drain guards to stop objects from accidentally falling down drains, and only flush human waste and toilet paper to protect your pipes.

A sewer cleanout typically looks like a white or gray PVC pipe with a removable cap. It's often located either in your yard or basement, depending on your home's plumbing configuration. The cleanout pipe is designed to provide easy access to your sewer system for maintenance and inspections. It may be flush with the ground or slightly elevated, making it distinguishable from other pipes. When you remove the cap, you can access the sewer line directly or determine its direction, which can be helpful when you need to locate your sewer line from your house to the street.

It's advisable to have your sewer line inspected every three to five years to ensure its proper functioning and detect any potential issues early on. However, the frequency of inspections can vary based on factors such as the age of your sewer system, the type of pipes used, and your property's location. If you notice any warning signs like slow drains, foul odors, or sewage backups, it's essential to schedule an inspection promptly, regardless of the regular maintenance schedule.

Depending on the home, wastewater either goes into a septic tank and seeps back into the backyard or is sent via sewer system to a local sewage-treatment plant. Septic systems naturally separate different components of the waste so that it can naturally and safely disperse it. They are usually reserved for homes not served by a municipal sewage department (like rural homes). A treatment plant, on the other hand, speeds up that process through screening and purification.
