"Ryan was very understanding of my extremely emotional state learning that the sale of my home was delayed by having to replace my septic system. It was very stressful for me. I was very emotional & a lot of times not very patient with him because of the stressful situation. He was very understanding about my emotional state & accommodated all of my needs. I would highly recommend him."

"The goal was to build a sizable pole barn garage next to my house; however, my homes septic tank was in a terrible location that gave me at most 700 sq ft of build space. This was no problem for Russ and his team as they’ve done many septic tank relocations. He found a great spot for the new septic tank that allowed me to double the garage size! Also, he prepped and leveled the site for the future pole barn garage saving me time and money in the process. Call Valpo Excavation and Septic the next time you’ve run out of solutions. Russ and his team can help!"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

A mound septic system, when properly maintained, can last between 20 and 25 years on average—though some last longer or malfunction sooner than that. The most important part of maintenance is getting an annual inspection of the vital parts of the system to ensure they’re in proper working order and not too backed up with sewage.

Yes, a septic tank riser can replace a concrete septic tank lid. Risers are designed to replace various types of septic tank covers, including concrete, metal, and fiberglass, to provide easier access for pumping and repairs. While a plastic riser makes future access more convenient, the initial replacement can be difficult because concrete lids are very heavy, so it is a job best left to professionals. Once installed, you will need to be cautious around the riser during yard work, such as mowing, to avoid causing damage.

The pressure in a well pressure tank should be set 2 to 3 PSI below the pump's cut-on pressure. The cut-on pressure is the lower number in the pressure setting (e.g., the '30' in 30/50 PSI) and is the point at which the pump starts. The cut-out pressure is the higher number, where the pump stops.

For example:

  • If your pressure switch is set to 30/50 PSI, the tank pressure should be 27-28 PSI.

  • If your pressure switch is set to 40/60 PSI, the tank pressure should be 38 PSI.

Common pressure settings for household applications include 20/40, 30/50, and 40/60 PSI. The difference between the cut-on and cut-out pressure is typically 20 PSI.

A properly installed and maintained septic drain field (also known as a leach field) can last up to 50 years, though the average is around 20 years. However, factors like poor soil conditions, heavy usage, or improper maintenance can significantly shorten its lifespan to 15-20 years.

To extend the life of your drain field:

  • Schedule Regular Inspections: Have the entire septic system, including the drain field, inspected every two to five years to catch problems early.

  • Protect the Area: Avoid driving heavy vehicles or placing heavy structures over the drain field. Plant only grass or other lightweight vegetation with shallow roots over the area.

  • Maintain the Septic Tank: Proper care of the septic tank, including regular pumping and avoiding harmful chemicals, prevents strain on the drain field.

Be aware of signs of failure, such as strange odors, standing water, or unusually lush grass over the field, which indicate your system may need professional attention.

You should pump your septic tank once every two to four years for a family of four, depending on your septic tank size. You should pump a 1,000-gallon septic tank every two years, while a 1,500-gallon tank should be pumped every four years. Water usage also affects how often you should pump your septic tank. If you notice slow drains, foul smells, or gurgling sounds from your drains, you should pump your septic tank as soon as possible.
