"We had a salesman come out and tell us what they could do to raise our porch. A couple months later they came out do do it and said they didn't think it would work. Said they would try and if it didn't they would refund our $900 deposit. It didn't work We called and spoke with the salesperson and he said they would refund our deposit, but so far, 1 month later nothing. I don't understand if two people said we would get a full refund why they haven't done it yet. Update: They refunded our deposit in October. We appreciated it."

"Jim did a great job. He quickly assessed the problem and then took our unit with him to work on it more. When he got back to us, the fix would have cost more than it was worth. He gave us options for a new or refurbished PC. We felt the refurbished was a good deal and chose that. He came back and set that up and we are very happy with it. He then took a look at my laptop and again took it along. He tuned it up and installed a speed upgrade we wanted. Of course, we paid extra for the new unit and upgrades, but we thought the price was very fair. Jim seemed very knowledgeable and responsive. We will definitely call him again if we need any computer services."

Windows questions, answered by experts

Making a window in a basement larger costs an average of $4,200. You’ll need to pay an average of $550 to have a structural engineer plan the project, $500 to $1,500 for the installation labor, and an average of $2,200 for the excavation and window well installation. The remainder will go toward pulling permits, installing trim, and repairing drywall on the interior.

Most windows last between 15 and 30 years. The exact life span depends on a few things, including the frame material, the quality and type of glass, the weather in your area, whether or not the window is installed properly, and more. You can always speak with a window professional about whether or not it’s time to replace your windows or if repairs would be more affordable. You’ll need to consider the cost of replacing your windows, the cost of repair, and the longevity of each solution.

Impact windows are a type of window made with impact-resistant glass, designed specifically for hurricanes. The glass, treated with ethylene-vinyl, can withstand winds up to 200 mph, as well as flying debris. Brands sometimes test their impact windows with large missile impact tests.

Impact windows may be required in some places. For instance, the Florida Building Code requires homes to have impact-resistant windows if they live within a mile of the coast where wind speeds can reach 110 mph or more.

Replacement windows normally don’t come with new sills, as the sill is part of the window frame that the replacement window fits inside. If you’re replacing windows, it’s a good idea to replace the sill, as well, especially since the sill will be fully exposed and easily accessible for replacement.

The disadvantages of putting plastic over your windows are that they are time-consuming to install and don’t always have the aesthetic that you may be looking for. The plastic is lightweight and not at all sturdy, so if you have kids or pets, the plastic can rip easily, meaning you’ll need to replace it often. It also doesn’t allow for the freedom of window movement that window film or shades offer. The single advantage that plastic window coverings have is that they are inexpensive and can be simple to install.
