I had emailed him photos of the rooms and my measurements of square footage. I called him on our way back, on a Tuesday, to confirm the job and gave him a $100 deposit over the phone. On Wednesday his subcontractor, Ruben, called me and set up for Thursday, and by that evening they were done, all popcorn gone and everything cleaned up. When asbestos fibers become airborne, they enter a person's respiratory system. These fibers scar and damage the lungs and often lead to serious cancers like mesothelioma. Like many dangers in the house, asbestos isn’t easy to see when it could be causing serious damage. The amount of time exposed, combined with the person’s tolerance for asbestos inhalation and the amount inhaled, will all contribute to health problems.

if you install new siding on top of old asbestos siding, you may keep the fibers trapped, but it would not necessarily be considered encapsulation. To do so properly requires a professional, who uses a certain type of sealant that needs to be spread over the asbestos in a number of layers in order to trap all the fibers. Although you may be able to buy this sealant yourself, it is highly advised that, once you find asbestos, you call a pro immediately. 

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions. 

Asbestos-containing materials are not easily affected by water and do not disintegrate or dissolve when exposed to it. However, porous materials can deteriorate due to water exposure, leading to the release of asbestos fibers into the air. The settling of asbestos fibers can also occur as water makes them heavy, which reduces the risk of airborne exposure, though future disturbance of the materials could cause risk. Wetting asbestos-containing materials does not constitute safe removal, and the proper handling and disposal of asbestos materials should be left to professionals.

Asbestos encapsulation is an alternative to asbestos abatement or removal. Suppose you have hired an asbestos testing service and they recommend encapsulation. In that case, they will cover the asbestos with a protective barrier or put it in a sealed enclosure so the fibers cannot escape. Encapsulation usually costs between $2 and $6 per square foot.
