Start by removing any debris, nails, or staples left behind from the old carpet. Next, thoroughly vacuum the subfloor to eliminate dust, dirt, and loose particles. Laminate is a sturdy material that lasts 15 to 25 years if it’s properly maintained and isn’t damaged. Laminate with a higher AC rating lasts longer than laminate with a lower AC rating. For the most longevity, put laminate with an AC1 rating in low-traffic areas and use laminate with an AC3 or AC4 rating in high-traffic areas like entryways.

Removing laminate flooring is fairly straightforward compared to removing other types of flooring. The planks click and lock into place, so you can pry them loose without much fuss. If you plan to reuse your flooring, you must be careful not to damage the plank or the locking mechanism that keeps it in place. If it’s in good condition, you can reuse it in another room.

Whether or not you put flooring under kitchen cabinets depends on the type of flooring you’re installing. Tile and hardwood flooring can throw off the height measurement for cabinets, so the best practice is to install it first then add the cabinets on top. Laminate flooring, or any floating floor, should not be installed underneath cabinets because it expands and contracts, making the cabinets unstable.

In addition to local hardware stores, many big-box chains and national equipment rental companies carry floor sanders for rent. Additionally, U-Sand, manufacturers of a random orbital floor sander, operate a rental program in partnership with a number of different regional chains and local outlets.
