"They arrived early, but had called first.  After checking the insulation and ventilation, Charles told me I needed additional insulation and said my ventilation was fair but recommended 2 of the canned vents have solar fans installed.  I'm having the insulation done because of the rebates he is getting me. They did an energy audit for that.  I will submit a review on that after the work has been performed and I see that it has greatly helped with my ice dams, which is why I had him out in the first place. He seems very knowledgeable and everyone was very professional.

"First job they were great--$300 repairing a wooden garage (3 hours work plus material). I called the office and told them so. Later I called for a another job--stair railing for my front porch--they were terribly over-priced-I didn't accept their terms. So, mixed review."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

It’s possible that installing solar panels can lead to mold on the roof. The panels themselves are not the issue. Problems caused by improper installation—such as roof leaks and mounts that aren’t sealed properly—can cause mold. Another potential cause of mold is debris accumulation under panels, which can trap moisture. If you live somewhere with extreme snow, rain, or hail, your home could be more prone to mold.

Depending on the climate in your area, the best time to install solar panels is either winter or early spring. Summer is a fine time to install panels, too, but it tends to be the busy season, so prices may be higher and companies may have packed schedules. The installation process can take more time than expected between getting permits and finalizing a design, so start as soon as you can.

In most states, solar installers need to be licensed and insured as solar professionals, although some states don’t have specific requirements for installers. You can use our state licensing tool to check if an installer you’re considering hiring holds the proper licensing. No matter where you live, a member of your solar panel installation company must be a certified electrician to connect your panels to your home and the electric grid.

The average homeowner needs around 22 solar panels, but the exact number depends on your monthly energy consumption. Your solar professional should size your array to offset your consumption, meaning you’ll need fewer panels if you use below-average amounts of electricity, or more than 22 if you use above-average amounts of electricity. The number of panels also depends on the output of each panel. The average is around 400 watts, but you might need more panels if you install less capable equipment. Since there are so many variables, you should have a professional size your system.

Solar panels have a life span between 10 and 40 years, depending on the type of panel. For example, monocrystalline panels can last up to 40 years, while thin-film ones only last between 10 and 20 years. The longevity also comes down to keeping up with solar panel repairs and their related costs .
