First and foremost, don’t skip the prep work. Even if you have the steady hands of a surgeon, mistakes happen, and they can potentially be catastrophic. Also, never underestimate how much paint you’ll need. First, make sure that you tape off all the areas that you don’t want to paint black. It’s harder to paint a light color over black than to touch up any lighter spots you missed. Once you’ve taped it off, make sure that the surface is clean and smooth, and then prime the wall with a tinted primer in gray. This step will help to transition from a lighter color to a darker one.

You can apply stain over peeling stain, but it’s not a good idea. Your old stain will get in the way of your new stain bonding to the wood, so you’re likely going to see the same issue again shortly after application. Your best option is to sand off the old stain and clean the surface thoroughly before applying new stain.

This depends on the size and design of your door. If your door is on the smaller side and features some unique design elements, go with a brush to ensure you get in those hard-to-reach crevices without painting outside the lines. If you’re painting a large door, like a double door or garage door, and the panels are flat, go with a roller to get the job done quickly. 

The color of your paint shouldn’t make it harder to apply, but it can be harder to cover in one coat, depending on the surface. Using a good quality primer that’s tinted gray will help make applying your black paint easier. Even with a primer, you will likely have to use two coats to get a perfect, solid black finish.
