Basement Waterproofing, Crawl Space & Foundation Repair experts since 1991. Free estimates & inspections.

"I had a basement waterproofing project done by TC Hafford in March costing over 19K. It is now July and my basement is full of water, once again,on this rainy day. I have been back and forth with this company for months, and after sending someone in who finally admitted to faulty installation, I am still waiting for them to fix their mistakes. I absolutely would never recommend this company to anyone."

We install metal post foundations called Screw Piles in all of the Aroostook County, Maine area. (From the towns of Fort Kent, Madawaska, Caribou, Houlton, Fort Fairfield, Oakfield and surrounding areas) These are used instead of Sono Tubes, or other concrete systems, and are drilled down below frost level to prevent, shifting, lifting, or sinking. We can install them for new construction and also for existing structures. They can be used as foundations for decks, porches, patios, carports, home additions, sunrooms, cottages, sheds, mobile homes, gazebos, fences, gates, hillside stairways, docks, bridges, signs, lampposts, solar panels, mailboxes, clotheslines, etc. We can also do light groundwork the project site.

Foundation Repair questions, answered by experts

Mudjacking is usually reserved for light-duty slabs, like patios, driveways, and sidewalks. However, it can be an effective way to lift garage slabs and concrete around the perimeter of the home, which could harm your foundation if it’s not done properly. The risk of damage is why having a professional mudjacking company carry out the work is important. This type of slab or foundation repair is relatively inexpensive, especially if you consider that a DIY job requires that you pay to rent the necessary equipment.

If your building department catches you or a contractor doing foundation work without proper permits, they will likely put the work on hold until you secure the necessary permits, which can cause delays of days or even weeks. You can also face violation charges for construction without a permit, which can cost hundreds, depending on where you live.

Foundation cracks that are 1/8 inch wide or less, aren’t uneven across the gap, and don’t continue widening over time are usually just normal settling cracks and don’t suggest structural issues. Horizontal cracks and stair-step cracks on foundation walls, any cracks that continue widening, are wider than 1/8 inch, or where one side juts out beyond the other, are often indicative of structural damage.

Most homeowner’s insurance policies will cover the cost of slab leak repair that results from a natural disaster, like an earthquake or a severe flood, or from a tree falling on your home. Damage from frozen pipes in your slab is also typically covered. However, your policy is unlikely to cover the repair if an invading tree root causes the damage or if it’s a pinhole leak that results from corrosion. You should contact your insurance provider for a full run-down of what they cover.

Although some concrete cracks are cosmetic, others can be more serious. Cracks wider than ⅛ inch or that extend through the slab are serious and can cause structural damage. If you notice these types of cracks in your concrete patio, contact a local contractor who installs concrete patios to inspect the damage and determine how to fix it.
