"I purchased a heat pump electric water heater to take advantage of a generous rebate from Efficiency Maine. When looking for someone to install it I was referred to Jophil by a real estate company that I know. I called and was given a time that Kyle would arrive to give an estimate and perform the installation (if the estimate was accepted). I did accept the estimate and Kyle got right to work. While plumber’s tape is a great solution for many plumbing problems, there are some times when it’s not the right product for the job at hand. 

You shouldn’t use plumber’s tape on pipe connections in any of the following scenarios:

  • When connecting PVC pipes

  • If the pipe has wide threads, as water can still leak through the space between the threads

  • If the pipe has very tight threads, as the tape would prevent a proper connection

  • If the pipe threads are damaged, which would prevent the tape from providing a watertight seal

If your predicament is similar to any of these, a licensed plumber can help you solve the problem.

A clawfoot tub's water supply lines and drain pipe are visible above the floor. When the water leaves the bath, it enters the drain pipe, which leads under the floor, before connecting to the main drain pipe leading to the sewer system or septic tank. Some modern clawfoot tubs also feature an overflow hole and pipe to prevent the bath water from spilling out if you overfill it.

Start by pouring hot—but not boiling—water down the drain. The heat of the water may be enough to break down the clog. You can also try ½ cup of dish soap or 1 cup each of white vinegar and baking soda. If you choose a chemical unclogging product, ensure it’s appropriate for toilets to avoid damage.

It can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours to drain the water lines in a house. Larger homes or homes with more complex systems will take more time, while smaller homes with a single bathroom and fewer appliances will take less time. Turning off the water and opening all the faucets should only take a few minutes to half an hour, but the rest of the job is time spent waiting for the water to drain.

If nothing is coming out of your faucet, you could have frozen pipes, a clogged faucet, or your water supply could be shut off. First, check your shut-off valves. If it's a hot sunny day, you can rule out frozen pipes and look closer at your aerator for signs of mineral deposits. Removing the aerator and cleaning it out can often return water flow. If temperatures are below freezing, you may have frozen pipes. Knowing what to do when pipes freeze is essential for thawing your pipes and preventing them from bursting.
