"From my first visit with Arborist Jason through their completion of cutting and removing nine trees on my property and several more on my neighbor's property in addition to tree trimming, it was professional and first class throughout the process. What I saw was a company that just doesn't drop trees; they remove them with care and safety in mind. The entire crew was friendly and the equipment they use, starting with their huge crane to get at those tall and difficult location trees, was without a doubt one of the most impressive sights I've witnessed. The whole neighborhood seemed to come out and watch. It was pure "Art". Simply put. Timber Falls is Top Notch. I definitely was very impressed. And, No! I'm not getting anything for writing this review. This is simply sharing information about a company I was very happy with. Get a quote from them and experience the professionalism yourself. You won't be disappointed."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Not all leaning trees are dangerous, but they can be a hazard as gravity may eventually cause them to fall. A key factor is whether the lean is new or has been present for a long time. Trees that have grown with a lean for years are not typically an immediate danger, but a sudden lean is a cause for concern as it often indicates weakening roots. If a tree is leaning more than 15% from vertical, you should consider having it straightened or transplanted. To be safe, it's always best to hire a professional arborist to inspect any leaning tree to assess the risk and avoid potential accidents.

Common signs that a tree is rotting include dead branches, a leaning trunk, peeling or cracked bark, leaf discoloration, and the presence of fungi. If you notice any of these signs, it’s best to hire an arborist near you to inspect your tree and determine if it can be saved or if it needs to come down.

The amount of time it takes for a tree trunk to rot depends on several factors, including the tree’s size, species, and environmental conditions. It can take anywhere from a few years to several decades for a tree’s trunk to rot. A tree stump, on the other hand, can take up to 10 years to disappear after it’s decayed naturally.

The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.
