"I rarely give any service or product a 5 star. L&B services helped me with a deck repair that I cannot do. They bent just enough to do what I asked, as this was a temporary repair. In 2-3 years I will need to have the current deck replaced. If this company is still in business I will reach out to them first for an estimate. L&B has been 2-3 successful hires through Home Advisor/Angi. Too many from Angi fail. I am glad to know and have experienced success with L&B! I would highly recommend L&B for your project. They offer many different services and might just meet your needs at a reasonable price. Thank you, L&B Services(Bob & Bob!)"

"This crew did a great job repairing my deck, jacking and leveling my addition, building a new retaining wall to support the addition as well as new cedar shingle siding. They are hard working and skilled as well as polite and honest. I will be happy to hire Nate and his crew to do more projects in the future."

"The new deck is perfect. They showed up on time each day and worked the entire time they were here. They even noticed a few issues from the previous contractor and brought them to my attention. "Hired these guys to build a long half wall built out onto a concrete floor in order to mount some electrical equipment. Zack was very knowledgeable, and gave me a couple options for what I wanted to achieve. He also helped me build the wall in such a way that allowed easy access for the electricians coming in behind him, which helped save time and cost later down the line. Quote was very reasonable, and the install was done quickly and efficiently, with a high level of attention to detail. I was very satisfied and have recommended them to others who ended up having a similar experience. High level of professionalism and very respectful, honest folks. look forward to having them involved in my next big project."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

Using a steel frame may raise the value of your home. Steel is more heat resistant, has better longevity, and doesn’t need any upkeep compared to traditional wood. You can also customize a steel build a little easier than other materials like brick, concrete, and vinyl—which have trouble bending and adapting to renovations.

To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.

Not all porch columns are load-bearing, though they can be. Some porch columns are simply decorative. There are ways to identify a load-bearing column, like looking for visible seams and a foundation. Also, check to see if the column directly enters the ground. In some porch installations, a contractor will excavate a hole to install a column into the earth along with a buried cement base for stability.
