"Jacob Schott of Solid Framing Engineering was/is phenomenal is his support as a structural engineer. Mr. Schott listened, and heard, what the requirements were. He proposed acceptable, structurally engineered solutions in a timely, professional and thorough manner. We hired Jacob Schott of Solid Framing Engineering to aid in ensuring that residential new build actions would adhere to structural safety & longevity standards. Our requirements consisted of a rather large deck, a bridge (12?x29?) with a cover/portico section and exaggerated soffits. All these requirements were in Mid-coast Maine where significant winds, attacking from various directions, are prevalent and cause for multi-axis planning to control potential environmental considerations. Mr. Schott continued to provide engineering advice/direction after the sub contractor failed to adhere to specifications and induced the need for modified engineering solutions?even after having concluded the initial scope of work."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Delaying structural engineering in Lewiston increases the risk of foundation cracks worsening due to freeze-thaw cycles and water infiltration. Snow accumulation on compromised roofs or decks can threaten structural safety, while moisture issues left unaddressed may lead to mold or rot. Prolonged neglect can make repairs more invasive and jeopardize the longevity of historic properties, ultimately impacting overall structural stability.

Helpful?

Lewiston’s cold winters and frequent freeze-thaw cycles require structural engineering designs that address frost heave and heavy snow loads. Foundations are often built deeper below the frost line, and reinforced materials are used to maintain structural integrity. Construction teams in Lewiston must plan for weather-related delays and may use temporary heated enclosures to ensure concrete cures properly during winter months.

Helpful?

Properties in Lewiston often have unique challenges, such as historic mill buildings with aging structural elements, steep slopes, or soils with high clay content or exposed ledge. Proximity to the Androscoggin River can mean higher water tables and flood risks, requiring specialized foundation solutions. Renovating older structures or adapting them for modern use frequently involves additional assessments and careful planning to ensure safety.

Helpful?

In Lewiston, using metal tools to chip ice from concrete steps or driveways can cause surface damage, while excessive salt application accelerates corrosion and concrete breakdown. Neglecting to clear gutters or repair drainage issues allows water to seep into foundations, especially during spring thaws. Regularly checking for ice dams and promptly addressing moisture around basements helps preserve structural integrity in Lewiston’s climate.

Helpful?

In Lewiston, structural engineering projects may uncover hidden issues like the need for hazardous material abatement in older buildings or the discovery of unstable soils requiring engineered foundations. Winter work often demands temporary heating and weather protection for materials. Historic preservation guidelines can introduce extra steps, and working near the river may require environmental safeguards, all of which can extend project timelines and complexity.
