"Dani is great to work with. I have thrown so many things for her to do. Always able to get it done with great attention to all her projects. Dani has rebuilt my mudroom, put in doors, window, flooring. As I write this she is building me a bedroom in the basement. The screened in porch was built but she did the finish word. Putting up walls, making the screen to go in the windows. She has made wooden doors for 2 different places of the house. Excellent with a 10 not being high enough."

"Excellent work. We purchased natural cherry cabinets in shaker style, with the panels made of solid wood rather than veneer. That is more difficult work, as each panel has to be constructed from several planks. Moreover, the clear finish would leave any flaws more visible. Simply put, the doors are beautiful--flawless in both construction and finish. They are similar in quality to custom cherry furniture we own."

"Everything went wonderfully with this company.  They were very professional, listened to exactly what my problem was, and explained to me how they were going to diagnose the problem and/or solve it before doing any actual work.  Once they started, the team (three people came) worked together like a well-oiled machine.  One was in the room with diagnostics, one was at the fuse box looking for possible problems there, and the third went into the crawlspace beneath our house to look at the physical wiring.  Once the problem was found (there was a faulty wire beneath the house that had come loose from the junction box), it was fixed and tested within minutes and another full diagnostic was done to make sure there were no other possible issues.  They cleaned up after themselves very neatly.  They also replaced the light switch with a dimmer switch at no extra cost!  Well within my budget, and came in even lower than their original (FREE) estimate!  I would highly recommend this company to anyone in the Bergen County area.

"We just can't say enough in praise of John Cole of Backdraft Custom Build. Our experience with him was excellent and wholly successful. He arrived on time, he worked hard, he worked quickly and with confidence that experience brings. He has all the tools and he knows how to use them. No matter what curves the job presents, he knows how to navigate them. He quotes a price the average working family can afford, and he sticks to it. He's a nice guy, he's polite and easy to get along with. He makes the entire process a breeze for the customer. My wife and I were stressed out about our project. We worried about price, materials, time and having a stranger in our home. But these worries disintegrated with the professional service John provided. These days a lot of contractors have the "you need me more than I need you" attitude, and the bloated price tag to go with it. We are so happy to report none of that with Backdraft Custom Build. We have found our "go to" contractor and we will give him all our work projects moving forward. We'll never call any other builder again. Does your family have a building project you need done? We are proud to wholeheartedly recommend this talented craftsman to all our friends and neighbors. You will be delighted with John Cole from Backdraft Custom Build! Closets questions, answered by experts

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

Costs range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on size, materials, and design complexity.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

Custom closet renovations offer a return on investment of 50% to 60%. This means that if you spend $2,000 on a closet remodel, you can expect to see your home's value increase by $1,000 to $1,200. Investing in a custom closet allows you to enhance your daily living experience while building equity.
