"I hired Kevin Martin (H. Hedges Home Improvement) to build a new deck, replace a bathroom floor, and repair kitchen cabinetry. Kevin's quote was very competitive and fair. He and his crew showed up exactly when they said they would. He was very collaborative and his communication throughout the project was excellent. It is clear that he wants his customers to be happy at the end of the day. Our HOA also hired Kevin to replace fencing for a 14 unit association and build a new enclosure for a dumpster. Again, his bids were fair and competitive and he performed quality work. I would not hesitate to recommend him."

"A&D Renovations was a dream to work and I'll consider them for all my future home projects from now on. I contacted Dennis based on his rating here on Angie's List and was not disappointed. He scheduled in my appointments around his busy schedule and provided me a professional and courteous experience. I always felt we were on the same page and Dennis welcomed phone calls or emails from me, even over the holidays if I had any questions. His focus was understanding my vision and to execute it as I wanted it done. The job was completed on time and looks fantastic. I highly recommend A&D Renovations to any friend or family member."

Their crew showed up on time, were knowledgeable about what needed to be done, and couldn't have worked any harder or more efficiently. I was impressed with their conscientiousness, their respectfulness of my property, the exceptional cleanup job, suggestions, and trustworthiness. "I found Greg to be both knowledgeable and responsive. He designed and built a sunroom addition, which is now my favorite part of our home. His crew was respectful and diligent. Most of them and his subs were well qualified, but a few needed greater supervision. The project took longer to complete than contracted for, but was not significantly delayed, especially considering that it was undertaken during the height of the pandemic. The design was well thought out, and most of the work well executed, though some of it needed returns and fixing (which Greg did). On the whole, Greg is a hard worker, and the sunroom adds considerably to our enjoyment of the house."

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"Tidal Brook Construction has done a number of projects at my house including replacing a patio door, removing and patching old skylights, and replacing a rotted out door frame. Cory and his team were fast, courteous, and tidy. Pricing was affordable for top quality work. I'd hire them again without hesitation."

Home Building questions, answered by experts

It is a good idea to check in with your local city and state regulations before committing to building a shipping container home no matter where you live. This concept is pretty new across the country, and many places won’t let you build one.

The International Code Council (ICC) offers guidelines for home builders on the safe use of ISO intermodal shipping containers repurposed as building components, which can be helpful to review when planning or designing a shipping container home.

The longest part of building a custom home is the design phase. It takes multiple professionals and a ton of work to bring your vision for your dream home to life while sticking to a homebuilding budget and also ensuring everything is built to code. Expect the design phase for a custom home build to take six months to a year.

How long it takes to build a custom home or rebuild a home after a disaster varies depending on many factors, but averages between seven and 14 months. Smaller homes or homes that don’t need a re-poured foundation may take less time to build than larger homes or homes without an existing foundation. Material availability, contractor schedules, and permit and inspection timelines can all affect how long your house takes to build.

Hiring a reliable home builder is an essential task, but there are a few questions you can ask a potential builder to ensure you they are trustworthy and up to the task:

  • How long do you expect the process to take?

  • Are you fully licensed and insured?

  • How much of the work will you subcontract?

  • Will you pull all of the necessary permits for the job?

  • How long is the builder’s warranty you include with your work?

  • How do you handle resolution for issues I might have with the finished product?

  • How much experience do you have?

Buying a house is easier than building one from scratch. Buying an existing home is almost always faster, even if you need to make renovations once you move in. When you hire the right team to build a home, they will simplify the design and build phases so that there is little guesswork throughout the process, but building new construction will almost always take longer than buying an existing home.
