"I bought a fixer upper a couple months back with a leaky basement and moldy smell. After receiving a quote from a competitor that left me feeling a little uneasy. I contacted Rob based on the stunning reviews found on HomeAdvisor. After reading reviews one after the other about how happy people were, I wanted his opinion and expertise regarding my situation. Rob responded immediately, and came by my house the following Saturday morning even though he was going away for the weekend with his wife to celebrate their 30th Wedding Anniversary. He didn't want me to have to wait a week before he would have a chance to swing by. He was not only prompt, but he took the time to explain the process as well as discuss some other things I have going on in my house. His knowledge is astounding in all areas of building and remodeling. Rob assured me that the "smell" in my basement would no longer be an issue, nor would the water. He arrived with his 3 boys to do the job and I must say watching all them work together and interact with each other the way they did spoke volumes to me. A family doesn't get that way by accident...that just tells you the type of character that Rob has, and the kind of person that his wife must be. Real genuine honest good people and I couldn't be more pleased with the job. His price was definitely fair and I no longer have any smell or water in my basement, whatsoever! I would highly recommend Rob and his crew for any job that you need done. He and his boys have the integrity that lack in so many larger companies today and I look forward to more projects in the Springtime."

"I highly recommend Octagon Cleaning and Restoration. We recently purchased a house on the water and discovered that we had a mold issue in our basement. Matt and his crew were professional, informed us what needed to be done and completely eliminated the mold and the musty smell. Matt was very responsive to my texts, answered all my questions and a great representative of Octagon."

"Though Rob was extremely courteous and prompt, he quickly diagnosed that we would need to drill into the basement floor to create a sump basin to prevent further flooding, at a total cost of about $4500.00. Wanting a second opinion, I called my plumber. Within seconds of walking into our basement, he found that we already HAD a sump basin, and that an old house trap was clogged and causing backup to the basin. For $1000.00, the plumber removed the house trap and ran the line directly to the sewer, cleaned the sump basin, and we have not had an issue since. In the end, we saved thousands of dollars and a lot of unnecessary drilling which would not have fixed the issue. I do not think that Rob was being deceitful in any way, but I was disturbed that he did not find the existing basin which was under a large, loose tile in the utility room where we stood discussing the issue for 30 minutes. In my desperation to fix the problem, I very nearly did not get a second opinion; boy, am I glad I did!

"They messed up the ceiling part in a corner.  They got the wall paint mixed in with the ceiling paint.  They did try to fix it.  We do have cathedral ceilings.  It took them a long time to paint.  I was a little frustrated or upset by the fact that the painter didn't have an extension ladder and ended up standing on my wood stove to reach.  It made me so nervous.  I really didn't want them to come back to fix the ceiling.  They did smudge it pretty bad, but I just choose to not look at it. It wasn't exactly what I would have expected from a professional painter, but they did an okay job. They were very responsive.  The owner called me the next day to see how it went.  They were very punctual and professional.  I guess it would be somewhat shady with the lack of ladders they had.  I would probably use them again.  Because of the difficult job, I think overall they probably are decent painters, it was just above their expectations.  They were prompt and worked right thru until they were done."

"I hired him for a home inspection, a radon air test, and a septic inspection. He arrived within 10 min of appointment time. His home inspection was very thorough and a comprehensive report provided in a timely manner. His radon air test was completed in the basement, rather than the lowest living area (stated that there was a laundry hookup in the basement so it had to do down there, despite a full laundry room on the second floor)"

Basement Waterproofing questions, answered by experts

You should take care of any sign of water in your basement, whether it’s dampness after heavy rain or puddles of water on the floor. Besides potentially causing a health hazard, the moisture can damage your home’s structure and foundation. Furthermore, mold can grow quickly and spread throughout the rest of your home. With mold remediation costs ranging between $1,200 and $3,400, it’s best to avoid mold issues by fixing the leak.

Damp proofing and waterproofing are both methods to help keep your basement dry. Damp proofing keeps soil moisture from entering your basement, which is helpful since your basement is underground. Waterproofing, however, keeps both soil moisture and liquid water out of the basement, which is essential, especially if you live in a wet environment. Because it’s more protective, waterproofing typically costs more than damp proofing.

Some disadvantages of crawl spaces are mostly regarding the air itself—moisture build-up and poor ventilation, which can cause problems both in the house and underneath it, even damaging the foundation itself. Crawl spaces are difficult to access and often invite unwanted pests during the hot summer months and the cold winter ones. These hard-to-seal spaces are also susceptible to water damage during periods of heavy rain or melting snow.

You’ll need to reseal the foundation every five to 10 years, depending on the sealant you’ve used, the moisture conditions present in and around your home, and the condition of your foundation. Having a foundation inspection conducted before reapplication can help you catch any problems before you begin resealing. Of course, if you notice any new leaks or other moisture problems at any time, it may be necessary to reseal the foundation sooner.

Yes, it is generally unhealthy and can be dangerous to live in a damp basement. The damp air can negatively affect your breathing and lungs, and the moisture promotes mold growth and pest infestations. Inhaling mold spores or waste particles from insects and rodents attracted to the moisture can be hazardous. This damp, moldy air can also circulate into your main living area. It is crucial to resolve any moisture problems and implement preventative measures before using your basement as a living space.
