Small jobs welcome

"We consider ourselves very lucky to have found just the right person in Wade Ambrose, to handle this complex job. Replacing 200+ linear feet of rotting exterior "rain boards" with plastic lumber. We knew that it might seem straightforward, and a certain amount was just that, but rot had set in below the top layer, and Wade and apprentice Sage, expertly removed all that, replaced it not only in the best workmanlike manner, but a real touch of aesthetics when faced with unforeseen issues: garden hose bibs, propane tank ice shields and piping, movable stairs that needed to be close to house but still shed rain. Because of all that, it took a full two weeks, but much was due to weather--beyond anyone's controlled-- and supply issues. Clean work site during and after and took all the demo away. Good for next 30 years. We also wanted to praise Wade for his good balance of family/work life. Even though there were long days of sunlight in August, Wade was sure to not go for 12 hour workdays, and safety issues that can result. He was happy, we were happy, Sage was happy to learn with him. You will be too. (And below estimated cost!)"

"I can't overstate the quality of the work these folks did. We had our unfinished attic converted to living space, and the space had a lot of funky angles and old framing. G.A. Doughty's team did an incredible job making it work, including a half-bath! We're very pleased with the result. Everyone at G.A., the project manager, office staff, and all the subcontractors were very polite and fun to work with. Everyone who came to the house was very friendly. The only issue we had was that for a few months during the middle of the project, things seemed to stall out for about 6-8 weeks. I think they were having some availability issues with subcontractors and were overloaded from other projects."

Small jobs welcome

"They did a good job especially considering how brittle my old siding had become over the years. I’m pleased with their work and the price was right. I plan to hire them to do a couple more small jobs that I’m to old to do myself."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

You should plan on waiting at least a year and ideally two to three years after construction before finishing your basement. This will give the foundation time to settle in response to the weight of your home and the expansion of the surrounding soil. You can then repair your foundation and seal any cracks as needed before finishing it to reduce your risk of future leaks or other issues.

Common mistakes when finishing basement walls include neglecting proper insulation, insufficient moisture management, and poor ventilation. Not addressing these issues can lead to mold growth, water damage, and discomfort. Additionally, inadequate planning, improper framing, and rushing the project can result in subpar outcomes.

It's essential to follow best practices, seek professional guidance if needed, and prioritize thoroughness and attention to detail.

When considering finishing your basement, take into account a few pros and cons:

Pros

  • Can increase the value of your home

  • Separate space from the rest of the house

  • Customize and personalize the basement to suit your needs and style

  • Increase the amount of living space in your home

Cons

  • May not regain enough value to cover the cost of finishing

  • Lack of natural light if it’s below ground level

  • Moisture or flooding can cause costly damage

  • Installing plumbing and electrical can be messy and costly

Yes, you can add a bathroom to an unfinished basement, but you’ll want to take proper precautions if doing so. As with any bathroom addition, you’ll need to make sure that it’s approved by local building authorities first. With unfinished basements, you especially need to keep an eye on proper ventilation practices.

Whether it’s more affordable to gut a house than build a new one depends on the markets where you'd be buying and selling. However, it’s usually less expensive to renovate a home than to build new construction.

Most homeowners pay between $100,000 and $200,000 for demolition and remodeling costs, whereas the average cost to build a new home is between $139,000 and $531,300.
