"Sonny did a beautiful job on the build of our new deck! He came to the job prepared and was willing to put in long days to finish the deck in a timely manner. We couldn't be more satisfied with the quality of work he did for us! 10/10"

"All Time did three significant projects, including fencing renovation, rebuilding a bulkhead, and enclosing a shed area with doors. Mike is professional with an associate's degree in building-related fields, training and on the job experience. "What a great job the crew at building brothers LLC did they start early and work all day into the night nothing stops them from working they worked all weekend and came back Monday to finish up in the drizzling rain and after they cleaned up and took all the debris and trash away and left nothing behind. We were and are very happy with the work and the value for the price."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

No rules state how much of a load-bearing wall can be removed. Rather, you need to adequately support any area that is removed. Support should always be added to as much wall area is being removed. Failing to support the area properly will result in structural damage.

Most Cape Cod houses are two stories tall at the peak, although they’re considered one-and-a-half stories tall because the steep roof pitch cuts off a portion of the living space on the second story. Unless you raise the roof on your Cape Cod house to add a dormer, the interior rooms upstairs will lose some usable living space to the sloped ceilings.
