"Fabulous! We needed our water conditioner serviced and other company wouldn't touch it because they didn't install it and just wanted to sell us a new one. Rebecca scheduled us for the following day! Steve Venditti was great, has 20 years of experience and knew what he was doing. He spoke with the manufacturer and they decided what needed to be done. He had the parts on his truck and 4 hours later the job was done. $500 included parts and labor and service call. Very fair price and excellent service. Totally professional. Highly recommend."

"Everything went great. The old hot water heater was removed and then the new hot water heater was installed where I requested it to be with all of the plumbing done in a neat professional manner. It was a pleasure working with Bamford plumbing and I have been very happy with the work they have done. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

"Very professional and very knowledgeable. They preformed exactly as requested: quieted vibrations, fixed items that were missed at original installation, balanced system and eliminated duct noise when system starts and reaches desired temperatures. Also installed new controller and easy to use thermostats. Highly recommend."

Install Central Vacuum questions, answered by experts

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.

Whether talking about a whole-house central vacuum or a portable vacuum cleaner, the expected cost of major repair work should always be balanced against its replacement cost. However, excluding high-cost motor replacements or major electrical trouble, repairs on a central vacuum system are typically far less than the cost of purchasing and installing a new one.

Technically, yes, you could install a central vacuum system on your own, but it is a very difficult DIY. There is a significant amount of planning, cutting into walls, and electrical wiring work that goes into it, which should only be performed by a professional. Because of the difficulty and expense associated with a central vacuum system, it’s worth it to hire a professional company familiar with the installation's complexities.

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.
