"We hired AES to do our master bathroom remodel. We are very happy with it, it’s beautiful! Everyone was friendly and professional, the sales person/estimator, the two men who did the work, the concierge, they were all very good at what they do. The workers were detail oriented and cleaned up the place every day before they left. We received quotes from 3 companies for this job, AES was in the middle. We really liked the concierge service - they send a designer with you to shop for the tiles, flooring, fixtures, etc, they help you pick everything out and tie it all together into a coherent design. It was very helpful, they even help you pick out paint colors."

"I placed a notice on Angi that I desperately needed an architect. I was given a list of 5 companies, however Campbell Architects (CA) contacted me first. As a matter of fact, I do not recall any of the other companies reaching out to me. When I tell you that Johnathan Campbell stepped in and did what I needed him to do which was to draw a PLAT of my property, he also went above and beyond what one would expect someone as busy as him to do. He came in and recognized that in addition to needing a PLAT, I was also having a terrible time getting the work on my property completed because a hostile neighbor continuously contacted the DOB with false statements causing me to incur numerous Stop Work Orders. When I asked Mr. Campbell what his experience was with this sort of thing, he told me and then offered his help. What I found was a very thoughtful, quiet, and professional architect who had seen it all. Not only did he understand the situation with the neighbor, he also understood my plight with the DOB and set about methodically, and very carefully stepping in to argue my case for me. He has the experience, he has the knowledge, he has the patience and he is an established and well known architect in this area, and highly respected at the DOB. It took me six months to get a response from the DOB, but once Mr. Campbell stepped in, it only took one day. My point here is that the magnitude of an individual's professionalism, knowledge and capabilities is reflected in the work product and engagement experience you the homeowner will receive. Here, Mr. Campbell made a WORLD of difference in my life as a homeowner trying to do her best against a system of mostly men who know the system, who can be cavalier and do not really care that we the homeowners have become frustrated with DOB. Mr. Campbell is an ANGEL. If you ever need an architect, he is your guy. He is a no nonsense kind of man who really, really cares about people and understands that most homeowners are "no match" for the DOB machine that controls the movement of homeowners here in the DMV. I am so grateful to Angi for creating a platform where I could find Mr. Campbell. I honestly do not know if I could have survived my nightmare ordeal without his knowledge, strength and capabilities. I now consider him to be a friend. I was shocked that he was willing to help me with the crazy man next door, but he took all of that on. He has made a difference in my mental health and ability to complete the work that I started, which the neighbor constantly stopped. I feel that I got more than an architect when I met Mr. Campbell. When people tell me they need an architect I always tell them JOHNATHAN CAMPBELL FROM CAMPBELL ARCHITECTS. This is the best company I have worked with in years. So grateful to have met him."

"We had 4 contractors come for estimates. Amazingly only 2 actually gave us an estimate. Coastal was definitely the most professional of the 4 right from the start. They were not overwhelmed by the project at all whereas the other 3 contractors didn't seem to really know where to even start. The sales representative listened to our ideas about what we were looking for and gave us a layout blueprint which we reviewed a few times before deciding on the final layout. The lead carpenter was here pretty much right at 7 a.m. every day so we could touch base before we left for work. He was very understanding of our questions as the project went on and was very careful to ask us if we wanted something done a certain way before he did it. We made some changes along the course of the project and he was able to easily adapt and usually came up with a better solution than we had considered. We even changed the complete layout of 2 of the rooms, switching the bedroom for the common room (on the day he was to frame out the bedroom!) and he was able to make the switch without any problem or hassle whatsoever. He also made a great suggestion on moving some of our HVAC units which really opened up a lot of space in one of the rooms which was going to be too cramped otherwise. The subs all seemed to be good but it was nice because we just dealt with the lead carpenter on almost all issues. For example, we noticed some issues with 2 of the lights that shared a switch and he relayed the concern to the electrician and it was taken care of right away. We're just waiting for the bathroom vanity to be delivered and the pool table to be moved to a different room and for some final touches for the project to be completed. The final cost was slightly higher than the estimate because we chose to go with recessed lighting, we had the electrician do some other small jobs for us like replacing the main floor door bell and adding one to the basement, and some other small details like upgrading the door handles. Coastal was very careful to always let us know if something was going to be different from the estimate before they went ahead. They don't do floors or the painting but gave some good referrals. The lead carpenter got one of their painting referrals to prep/prime all the walls/ceiling/trim for us ($1500) while Coastal was still on the job so we didn't have to set something up separate. It wasn't always clear exactly when we needed to be doing certain things, such as picking out tile, vanity cabinets. For example, the lead carpenter was a little surprised we hadn't picked out some things before he started working which we didn't know we should have done. However, as with everything else for the project it was not a big deal and we just did things as we went along."

"I used an Angie's List deal for design consultation with Ruxton, and the meeting went really well, and the owner, Frank Zeberlein, who is also an architect, came up with plans a couple of weeks later to redesign the first floor (later, we would increase the scope to include the upstairs bathrooms and master closet). Frank reworked plans upon request, and he did so various times. He was really nice and professional throughout the whole process and was doing his best to meet our needs and concerns. His pricing was awesome, so it was hard to turn down his attractive offer. Ultimately, I chose another firm, however, because I felt their design plans were a bitter fit for me (not to say he doesn't have good design ideas that would please many people). However, I could tell he was really very knowledgeable and experienced in his field, as he could tell me in our older home where the original homeowners had put the stove, this entryway used to be a bay window, etc.; it all made sense why our house looked the way it did. I saw this big album of past work he had done in other homes, including kitchens that turned out beautifully. I gave this company a "B," since we didn't go with them in the end, but my experience with Frank was overall very pleasant."

Residential Design questions, answered by experts

It is usually worth it to hire an interior decorator, especially if you want your home to have cohesiveness and look like it belongs in a catalog. Interior decorators can be quite expensive, but decorating isn’t an ongoing cost, so you can expect to pay once for the service rather than on an ongoing basis. Interior decorating can be especially worthwhile if you’re selling your home, as house staging can make your property feel more welcoming and help buyers envision themselves living in the space.

Universal design costs can be minimal when you add them during construction; however, adding universal design principles to existing homes can sometimes increase renovation costs. For example, a mid-grade bathroom remodel is estimated to cost around $30,000, while a standard universal design remodel can cost closer to $40,000. Adding accessible design components can include widening hallways ($500 to $2,000), curbless showers ($2,000 to $8,000), and widening doors ($400 to $800). Keep in mind that these increased costs can lead to higher resale values because universal homes may appeal to a wider variety of buyers.

Converting a garage into a living space may be worth it, provided you follow all local codes and get the necessary permits. The conversion may increase the value of your home in the long run. In the short term, it will give you valuable space and help you enjoy your home even more.

Designing a laundry room layout is usually done by building the room around the water access. The washing machine will usually have a water hookup and drain in one specific area and there will usually be another water source in the form of a sink. Many laundry rooms are laid out so cabinets, closets, and tables are built around those two areas. Don’t overlook the space-savings of shelves and cabinets placed above the machines or sink as well.

Mid-century modern design focused primarily on two things: simple, functional furniture, often with geometric shapes, and specific color palettes that included earth tones and what we’d today call retro colors. Furniture often blended different materials, like teak or oak wood, with vinyl, metal, and glass. Common mid-century modern paint colors included browns, reds, burnt oranges, yellows, aqua greens, and whites.
