The best way to clean an overgrown yard is to create a multi-stage game plan, from clearing out the debris to cleaning up the edges around hardscaping and landscape curbing. Get rid of yard debris like worn furniture and broken tools first, then start trimming and raking what’s left. Mow the grass, trim the hedges, and rake leaves away. Once that’s complete, move on to more detailed work, like pulling weeds and replanting gardens.

When your sod is new, you should keep an eye on it to prevent dehydration. As new sod plants its roots into the soil beneath it, it can easily get dehydrated and start to turn brown. Keeping a consistent watering schedule for your new sod will help prevent this issue and will help it thrive as it roots into your yard.

Once your sod is about six weeks old, you can start to establish a regular lawn maintenance routine, complete with mowing, edging, and fertilizing.  

You should avoid mowing your newly planted grass seed until it has grown 3 or 4 inches. This growth can take up to two months, depending on factors such as grass type, soil, and weather conditions. Before mowing, make sure that your grass is dry to prevent blade damage. Do not remove more than one-third of the grass blade on the initial mow.

Watering grass is a good idea when there is a drought and when temperatures are high. However, you don’t want to water in the middle of the day or if the temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit. 

The extreme heat will cause the water to evaporate faster than the soil can absorb it. So, it’s best to water in the early morning or early evening when the temperature cools off.

To prepare your lawn for core aeration, water it the day before you aerate. (Alternatively, you can wait until it rains and aerate the following day.) Aerating after watering or a rainy day will make the process easier since you can penetrate moist soil better than dry soil. You should also flag your sprinklers so that you don’t accidentally hit them while aerating. If you have a lot of thatch buildup in your yard, you might need to dethatch your lawn before aerating as well.
