"Having my cabinets refaced by The Contractors Inc was a very satisfying project. The price was reasonable, the service was great, and the results look awesome. There was even a problem with some doors that were mis-measured, which I might not have even noticed. The problem was immediately identified and quickly rectified."

"Mr. Diaz was great to work with - he and his crew repainted the entire interior of our home and installed all new wood flooring throughout. His attention to detail was much appreciated - they painted the interiors of the closets and did a very thorough job throughout our new home. We love our new hardwood flooring - he did a great job of matching the finish of the engineered hardwood on the lower level with the hardwood flooring on the upper levels. They left the home spotless after all the work was done! We would hire again."

"We thought hard about replacing or refacing our 36-year old cabinets for our large-sized kitchen with a cooking island and desk. We decided that it would be better to utilize our existing strong hardwood cabinet boxes and have them refaced. If I could give more stars for Kitchen Saver, I would! Our carptenter/installer Reid was fabulous! His attention to detail superb, workmanship top-notch, cleanliness excellent, plus he was pleasant and punctual. So nice to see a young person taking such pride in their work. And, we are thrilled with the look of our new kitchen!!!"

Small jobs welcome

"After several moves with the military to our forever home, we wanted to have our furniture cosmetically touched up, as it had incurred some nicks and scratches, with a few faded areas from heavy use. The kitchen in our new house also had been refinished several years ago, but the previous owners had been rough with the cabinets, leaving some scrapes and scratches. Eric did a fantastic job touching up all our furniture, which looks so much better now that all the scratches are filled and the faded areas blended. The cabinets in our gourmet kitchen look brand new. The cost was very reasonable, all the work was conveniently done in our home, and Eric was extremely knowledgeable and patient with all my questions. Getting an estimate via email with photos and scheduling was easy as well--it's just a great all-around local company worth supporting. Other companies wanted us to bring the furniture to them and had very high quotes just for a few pieces. I'm so happy I found them and my home feels so much more polished now."

"We had our entire bathroom entirely demolished all the way down to the support beams and fully rebuilt (the house is old and needed a lot of repairs). The entire team was absolutely amazing from designing and planning (Junior), to the project getting done (Kadir was our PM, Tony and Paul were our electricians, and all the other guys who came in to do the tilework and plumbing - I am sorry I do not know their names but they were also awesome). This bathroom required an enormous amount of work and it came out absolutely beautiful. The whole team takes a lot of pride in their work and they truly desire that their customers are happy and expectations are exceeded with their work. I am already planning more projects with them, their work is not limited to bathroom and kitchen remodels, and I look forward to working with them again. The quality of their work is guaranteed and their prices are super reasonable (big plus)."

"We hired John to build a custom breakfast banquette (bench with back) for our kitchen and dining area. John was easy to work with, always on time, was extremely knowledgeable on how best to execute the design and responded extremely quickly to any email I sent. The finished product is more than I could've expected imagined and is exactly what you get when you hire a true professional. HIs work makes me want to think about other projects for the home - closets, office, downstairs bar. Don't think twice about contacting John."

"Our kitchen cabinets were almost 50 years old and in very bad shape.  We had originally thought of opting for refacing, but Pete's price for brand new cabinets was very close to what another company charged for refacing only so it was an easy choice to make.  We are so glad we did!  From the beginning of the project with all of the questions we had, Pete was very responsive and gave us personalized, professional advice that perfectly suited our needs.  Our cabinet installer Steve and his helper Tyler were thoroughly meticulous as they assembled and installed the cabinets and hardware and treated our home with great care.  It was so refreshing to see a craftsman of Steve's quality who takes pride in his work and who provided us with such a beautiful result.  In addition, Steve was able to solve a plumbing problem we had with the hook up of the dishwasher and disposal which ensured the success of the final product.  My husband and I could not be more pleased with the new kitchen we have as a result.  From start to finish, Pete and his team provided exceptional service with first class results.  We highly recommend them to anyone seeking a quality kitchen renovation.  Thank you Cabinet Restoration Company!

"We love the finish process on the paint job that was done one four rooms and hallway. The only thing I would suggest is that the worker be more mindful when placing there equipment down on the floor. I had a few mishaps, but the company was very accommodating in preparing the problem"

FAQs for closet service projects in Chevy Chase, MD

Building a custom closet costs about $2,000, on average. Because many types, sizes, and designs are available, the cost to build custom closets ranges from $250 to $6,000 or more. A reach-in closet is on the lower end of the price range from about $250 to $1,500, compared to a walk-in closet at $750 to $3,500 or a wardrobe at the high end between $1,500 and $6,000 or more.

The main difference between a closet and a wardrobe is that a closet is a separate room for general storage with its own door, and a wardrobe can be either built-in or freestanding place to store clothing. A walk-in or reach-in closet connected to a bedroom often serves the same purpose as a wardrobe by primarily storing clothes and shoes. A built-in wardrobe often does not have doors and leaves clothes exposed to view, whereas a standalone wardrobe usually has doors.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

Yes, building a custom closet can definitely add value to your home. Creating a more useful and pleasing space to your home, especially a custom closet for prospective home buyers to imagine as their own, is likely to increase the value. However, avoid overdoing it with a closet that takes up too much space that’s otherwise more useful as living space, or paying extra for overly lavish materials and finishes that aren’t likely to add more value than they cost.
