"The whole crew was great. Arrived early and finished my asphalt top coat in under 3 hours. The driveway has a side walk attached that they also top coated. On top of that, they beat all other bidders on price, some by a considerable margin. The disparity concerned me, but I had prior experience with this company. I wouldn't hesitate recommending or using them again."

"We found Goodwood General Construction on Angieâ s list. Our project was relatively large in size. We added a six foot fence and changed our driveway from asphalt to stone pavers. We added a patio in the back. The project also included granite front and side steps, a granite mailbox post and the removal of several trees and bushes, and numerous old brick pavers and stones. The entire site had to be regraded to correct drainage issues on both sides of our house. Henry (The Contractor) was exceptional from the start. He was very calm and helpful during the whole process. He provided our estimate in a timely manner and was right on target for both the start date he promised and completion. The crew was respectful to our property and neighbors. At the end of each day they cleaned the site and left it immaculate. There were no surprises!I enjoyed having the crew here every day and Henry was always open to any adjustments I made along the way. They completed the project on time. I am 58 years old and have owned my home since 1994. I have had multiple contractors work on our home for various projects. This is the first time I actually enjoyed the whole process and was never â bullied for moneyâ . Our project is now complete and every person that walks by our house compliments his work. I cannot give a higher recommendation to Henry and his crew. We are sure that if you work with Goodwood General Construction you will be pleased with your experience. I have told Henry that any new clients that want to see our project that we would be happy to showcase his amazing work! Jeffrey & Rebecca Cockfield"

"I hired this company to install an asphalt driveway where I only had grass and dirt before. I was very impressed by the company. They were efficient and the work was high quality. They were quick to come and look at the project and talk me through my options. The price was great and the results are amazing. I couldn?t be happier with my experience. I would definitely recommend this company."

"They showed up exactly as planned. Very professional team, everything was cleaned after the work. Very satisfied overall. I did not check other contractors as I was very impressed by the first visit where the owner went in great details about what was needed an suggested improvements to the original driveway."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Gravel is one of the few driveway materials that can handle rain the second it’s installed. Unlike asphalt, which needs days to set, or concrete, which requires weeks to cure, gravel is ready as soon as it’s compacted. It’s naturally permeable, allowing water to drain straight through—with no risk of pooling or surface damage. Gravel driveways are one of the most affordable, at $1 to $3 per square foot, and can also last upward of 100 years.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.

While the specific timeline for building a driveway can vary based on driveway length and local weather conditions, the average concrete driveway can require several days to lay down all of the different parts of the driveway. The curing process may require you to avoid using your driveway for a week following construction. Heavier vehicles should be kept off of a new concrete driveway for several weeks. Building a gravel driveway may take just one to two days in total.

Even with regular maintenance, most driveways don’t last much longer than 30 years. Alligator cracking is a clear warning sign that your driveway’s foundation is failing, and cracks that are deep and wide can let water in, causing more damage. Standing water is another red flag. If your driveway doesn’t drain properly, it’s going to degrade slowly. Finally, if you’re seeing dips or uneven patches, that’s a sign the base layer or soil is shifting. If these issues pop up, it’s time to replace your driveway.
