"Hassan was hired to replace my trash compactor and redo my countertops. He did a great job with both. He removed the trash compactor the same day he came to give me the quote. He went above an beyond as I had kept adding little projects along the way ... replace my doorbell, fix a bedroom closet door, remove a latch on my basement door. He is such a good worker. Communication was a problem in the beginning with him not keeping in touch with me as to his work schedule, but that was worked out. As I will be moving in the near future, I told him I will be calling on him again if I need his help at my new home."

Only use spackle on plaster walls when the imperfection is small. It’s best used for nail holes or small dings in the plaster. Spackle dries quickly, allowing you to continue the repair process shortly after using it. Plaster can be tricky to repair, though, so if you run into issues, call a pro so that you don’t risk further damage.

Plastering lasts for around 15 to 20 years without needing repairs or maintenance in most cases, and with proper upkeep, plastering can last a lifetime—sometimes more than 100 years. Plaster repair costs between $1 and $3 per square foot, and you may need these services once every 15 to 20 years or so unless you have a harsh climate where humidity changes are a constant issue. You can also opt to skim-coat plaster for between $0.90 and $1.30 per square foot, which may serve you better in the long run.

Plaster itself has a higher R-value than drywall. However, there are other considerations surrounding plaster and insulation. At this level, the drywall is likely too compromised by extensive moisture damage to be considered safe. You can replace either the entire sheet or just the affected section. If you are unsure after a visual inspection, it is best to have a contractor or water restoration provider use a professional moisture meter to get an accurate reading.

Some textures are easier than others to DIY, but the short answer is yes, you can absolutely texture walls yourself. You’ll need certain materials, like a trowel or paint sprayer, but the most important things you’ll need are patience and time. DIYing wall texture can save money and be a fun, messy project, but homeowners need to know that adding texture to a wall isn’t a quick project.
