"We needed a skylight installed in our bathroom, and MMP did an excellent job--we are very happy with it! The team was friendly and worked quickly and efficiently to get it done before it got dark, and the quality of their work was excellent. Matt was very friendly and nice to communicate with as well, and always responded right away. I highly recommend MMP Construction to anyone looking for great quality work and excellent customer service."

"The remodel is still in Phase 1....demolition, clean out, putting in new sewer lines and pouring foundation/footings.We are in close contact with Kevin and Marvin every step of the way. They have given many suggestions and presented options to us as we planned the remodel together. This is a huge undertaking, remodeling and redesigning a 100+ year house into a contemporary, multigenerational home. We are all excited and can't wait to see how it develops. We are at the framing stage...so stay tuned. This will be an incredible transformation!"

"I was very impressed with Sentri Homes - their customer service was excellent. They sent a subcontractor to install some vinyl laminate in my bathroom and he ended up getting glue all over the carpet in our bedroom. The sub ended up ghosting both me and Sentri, leaving me stuck with a ruined carpet. Sentri stuck with me for over a month to get the carpet replaced with the identical original and to get the vinyl job 100% completed. The carpet was a Home Depot exclusive and Sentri handled everything with them. I will be using Sentri for a much bigger renovation I have coming up soon, because I know that they will make sure everything gets done right no matter what problems come up. The vinyl looks great too."

"AJF Construction did an excellent job. The two people who worked on our project, one of whom is the owner, were professional, honest, easy to work with, and very meticulous in the quality of their work. One major part of the project required the disassembly, cleaning, repair and replacement of floor-to-ceiling screens in a screened-in porch. This was custom-built, so each panel only fit its original location, and disassembly was complicated by some settling of the porch. They did a beautiful job on it, and did not paint over any hardware, so the next time it needs fixing it will be easy to do so. The quotes were detailed and there were no cost overruns. They did a great job on everything, kept us informed as the work progressed, and left the site cleaner than it was when they started. We were very impressed. We recently hired them again to replace a slide glass door. They did a wonderful job on that too."

"I was very pleased with Bolivar and his crew. This was my first time working with a contractor on a project of my own and he could not have been more helpful or accommodating. We spent multiple hours scoping the project and choosing materials together and he was quick to provide advice when I was stuck. I was initially nervous that I would be away during the bulk of the project, but Bolivar proved to need little guidance and consistently kept me updated on the progress. Bolivar's quality of work and attention to detail exceeded my recommendations and he finished the project in a timely fashion. I would hire him again without hesitation."

"We hired James and his company to refinish our deck. James came out personally to give us a few options. He was extremely knowledgeable, professional and efficient. He was able to fit us into his schedule to get our deck done in time for a party we were throwing on short notice which we really appreciated it. We hope to use him and his company in the future for more house projects we're planning on. You are in good hands with James and his team, I highly recommend them!"

"Our bedroom had rain water leaking in near the windows of our third floor "bump out". We had several contractors out to examine the exterior, where we found some very old wood splitting and cracking due to its age. From the start, Scott was by far the most thorough and professional contractor of the four we met. He had me hang my head out the windows with him to show me how much caulk the prior owners had been using to patch up the woodwork, and how some of the wood would crumble to the touch. This made it apparent that the patch job some of the less-thorough contractors had proposed would be a very short term fix. During his initial visit Scott also impressed us w/ his attention to detail. His quote included close-up pictures of the existing structure and details about insulation and vapor barriers which no one else discussed. He also provided a sketch of the woodwork to show us how he?d maintain the historical character of the 100 year old piece, and he was the only contractor confident enough to guarantee his work. Scott?s bid to do the work was not the lowest, but it was a no-brainer to go with him due to his thoroughness, thoughtfulness, professionalism and passion for craftsmanship. Once the project started Scott kept us informed of daily progress and finished in a timely manner despite some uncooperative weather. Scott replaced the dozens of intricately cut boards with modern Azec materials (should last us another 100 years) while perfectly maintaining the look and feel of the original design. We are thrilled with the results and will definitely call on Scott again in the future."

Custom Home Builders questions, answered by experts

Modular homes last an average of between 50 and 75 years, and high-quality modular homes can last for 100 years with proper maintenance. For comparison, a standard home lasts 50 to 100 years and can push to 150 or longer with good maintenance. Modular homes provide better long-term value in that they are significantly more affordable and can last almost as long, but some buyers are wary of modular home longevity, so the actual value if you sell could be lower.

Most cottages are around 1,000 square feet, making them smaller than most other styles. However, cottages are defined more by their decor and architectural focus on simplicity, functionality, and a connection to nature than they are by a rigid square footage or floor plan. While cottages are defined more by their charm and appearance than size, the smaller footprint does help maximize the comfort and charm, and it keeps the focus on connection to nature and family.

Modular homes can go up or down in value depending on a few factors. In areas where real estate is appreciating, the value of modular homes is likely to increase, and vice versa. Additionally, the value of modular homes depends partially on the area. In cities where every other home is stick-built, modular homes might be considered a functional obsolescence, in which case they could be less desirable and go down in value. In either case, though, modular homes can still be a good investment, especially since they provide housing at a lower upfront cost.

Building a house without blueprints is not advised. It will prevent you from obtaining necessary building permits and meeting building codes and is likely to result in shoddy construction and unsafe living conditions. Detailed blueprints ensure that a house is built to exact specifications and is constructed safely and structurally stable.

Renovating or remodeling an existing structure is usually less expensive than the cost to build a new house. That’s because you can save on the costs of new building materials, laying a foundation, framing the entire building, and installing new materials and utilities throughout the house. However, if a home is in very poor condition or is incredibly old, you could spend more on upgrades and restoration compared to building from scratch.
