"He was on time, arrived at 9am as quoted and began to install the system. The system required two suction points and a sump pit cover. The sump pit originally had a pedestal pump in place and none of the other radon companies would change the pedestal pump to a submersible pump as required for the mitigation system to function properly. Rhino Radon not only changed the pump but installed a back flow check valve to ensure proper functioning of the system. All of the other companies said we would have to employ a plumber or a handy man to get this done. Had we gone that route the closing would not have happened. Rhino Radon gladly did all the work required and didn't even break for lunch!!! He was more concerned with getting us out of the vacant house seeing we are already down the cape. The system that involved a crawl space and being vented through the garage roof was completed immaculately and the test results came back at 0.5 pCil/L. This pleased the lender and buyer and exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend Rhino Radon Services.

"We feel confident in recommending the home inspection services of Mr. Robinson. When looking for a person perform the inspection we relied on Mr. Robinson’s qualifications (member, ASHI), his experience within the location of our prospective home (i.e., familiarity with older homes in the Dedham, West Roxbury, JP and Boston/Roslindale neighborhoods) and his wealth of experience in working in and with older homes. As a licensed construction supervisor, he has consulted in some of the finest homes in Beacon Hill as well as many moderately priced homes surrounding the Boston area. We wanted a person who would be able to strike a reasonable balance between the cosmetic concerns of some older dwellings and those of a more serious nature. Mr. Robinson did just that. While our potential home needed some ventilation improvement in the attic and structural work for a detached garage, his emphasis on the safety and integrity of the house took center stage. He reaffirmed the value of our purchase price while giving us cost estimates for the recommended improvements. We wish to employ local contractors and Mr. Robinson was able to provide us the contact information for such. His wisdom, professionalism and guidance was invaluable."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a radon mitigation system depends on the type of system and its maintenance. With proper care, a system can last for many decades. Passive systems tend to last longer as they have fewer components that require replacement. Active systems, which have more moving parts like fans, generally have a shorter lifespan. For instance, water filtration devices and active pressurization systems require more frequent maintenance. While the system as a whole is durable, the radon fan in an active system typically has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years and will need to be replaced. As long as the fan is working, the mitigation system should function correctly.

A homeowner can install a radon mitigation system on their own. But it’s a challenging DIY that requires a lot of knowledge about radon mitigation as well as familiarity with local regulations. You do not want to risk an improper installation that leaves the system unable to detect radon or gives it a shortened life span. Relying on a professional is the surest way to guarantee a successful installation.

Keeping radon from getting into your home is much better than having to get rid of it once it's already indoors. While there may not be a way to fully prevent radon from getting into your home, there are things you can do to reduce the gas's ability to enter.

Sealing foundation cracks and openings can help keep the gas from seeping inside. Improving air flow, such as by opening windows, can also be helpful. If you're building your home from scratch, talk to your contractor about using radon-resistant construction to keep the gas out.

Radon enters your home when warm air begins to rise and exits through the roof, creating a vacuum that pulls cooler air from under the foundation. Part of that air is radon, which is an invisible, odorless gas that develops naturally when radioactive particles are deep within the ground. Those particles usually come from decaying matter in soil and rocks.

Mitigation can take several days depending on home setup, equipment accessibility, and achieving effective diffusion system sealed efficiency.
